The book analyzes the present state of the cinematographic industry in the Mercosul countries (Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay & Uruguay) while highlighting the limitations and the challenges of a market dominated for the mega-productions of Hollywood. For this, the author interviewed close to 50 cinema professionals from 4 countries. The result is an ample picture of the cinema industry of Latin America, its differences, similarities, impediments and alternatives, despite the paradoxical territorial closeness between them, while explaining this characteristic lack of union and organization as "we try to save ourselves, always looking for a strategic ally, generally located in the Northern hemisphere". The present editon was originally the thesis presented by the author to obtain the Masters degree from the USP.

Esta dissertação estuda as constantes de troca para vizinhos distantes no semicondutor magnético diluído 'Cd IND. 1-X' 'Mn IND. X' Se', que tem a estrutura da wurtzita. O método dos degraus de magnetização foi empregado, a partir de medidas de magnetização a 20 mK e campos magnéticos de até 5 Tesla. Mediram-se pela primeira vez os valores de quatro constantes de troca antiferromagnéticas para vizinhos distantes (além das duas constantes conhecidas para primeiros vizinhos). Os valores obtidos são: 'J IND.(3)'/'K IND. B'= -0.35 +/- 0.01K, 'J IND.(4)'/'K IND. B'=-0.20 +/- 0.01K, 'J IND.(5)'/ 'K IND. B'=-0.10 +/- 0.01K e 'J IND.(6)'/ 'K IND. B'= -0.08 +/- 0.01K. Para a identificação dos pares correspondentes à interações de troca medidas utilizou-se a estatística de clusters supondo uma distribuição aleatória dos íons de Mn. Simulações teóricas que consideram até clusters de tipo quarteto na estrutura hcp dos cátions foram implementadas. Uma identificação completa não foi possível por causa de coincidências entre populações de pares diferentes que ocorrem na estrutura deste material. Os resultados apresentam uma grande similaridade com os observados nos compostos cúbicos da mesma família.

From the late 1850s to the 1940s, multiple colonial projects, often in tension with each other, influenced the formation of local, transimperial, and transnational political identities of Arab Ottoman subjects in the eastern Mediterranean and the Western Hemisphere. Arab Ottoman men, women, and their descendants were generally accepted as whites in a racially stratified Brazilian society. Local anxieties about color and race among white Brazilians and European immigrants, however, soon challenged the white racial status the Brazilian state afforded to Arab Ottoman immigrants. In Transimperial Anxieties José D. Najar analyzes how overlapping transimperial processes of migration and return, community conflicts, and social adaption shaped the gendered, racial, and ethnic identity politics surrounding Arab Ottoman subjects and their descendants in Brazil. Upon arrival to the Brazilian Empire, Arab Ottoman subjects were referred to as turcos, an all-encompassing ethnic identity encased in Islamophobia and antisemitism, which forced the immigrants to renegotiate their identities in order to secure the possibility of upward mobility and national belonging. By exploring the relationship between race and gender in negotiating international and interimperial politics and law, national identity, and religion, Transimperial Anxieties advances understanding of the local and global forces shaping the lives of Arab Ottoman immigrants and their descendants in Brazil, and their reciprocity to state structure.

En los últimos años la expresión “cine transnacional” se viene utilizando como sinónimo de “cine contemporáneo” puesto que las actuales condiciones de producción, distribución y consumo cinematográficos conducen a unas transformaciones, también estéticas, que difícilmente pueden explicarse desde las culturas y políticas nacionales. La imposibilidad o, como mínimo, la dificultad de asignar una nacionalidad única o mayoritaria constituye una de las principales características del cine, y de la producción audiovisual, contemporáneos. Los textos incluidos en esta edición se ocupan de estas transformaciones a través de ejemplos relacionados con espacios geopolíticos (los países que componen Mercosur); la recepción y el consumo de producciones audiovisuales latinas en Estados Unidos o con el análisis de espacios ficcionales transnacionales: la ciudad global, la frontera y otros no lugares contemporáneos. Estos trabajos coinciden en una idea más general: el carácter transnacional del cine contemporáneo no es un asunto estrictamente cinematográfico, sino también político, pues tanto su realidad como su imaginario geopolítico afectan también al propio concepto de ciudadanía.

The Question of Class in Contemporary Latin American Cinema responds to the renewed interest in class within and outside academia by examining the aesthetics and politics of class in a representative selection of films from the contemporary cinemas of Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. It explores the relationship of cinematic practices to conflicting socio-political transformations taking place in these five countries such as the intensification of neoliberalism, the Turn-to-the-Left, and the growth of the middle classes in the period from 2003 to 2015. Utilizing a critical comparative method , it sheds a critical light on the presumed depoliticization (or new, aestheticized politicization) of contemporary Latin American cinema. The combined textual and industrial analyses of films from strikingly different cinemas and directors through the lenses of class allows for a contextualization of this trend and the observation of its limitations. Furthermore, this book distinguishes cinematic figurations that correspond to new conceptualizations of class introduced in social studies from figurations of class that have yet to be conceptualized.
