Excerpt from Vocations for Girls The object of this book is to give to young girls, and those responsible for the guidance of girls, some definite information as to conditions of work in the more common vocations. The facts were secured, with the cooperation of the Vocation Bureau of Boston, from many sources: the superintendents of large department stores, the director of a school of salesmanship, the managers of several manufacturing establishments, the head nurses of city hospitals, the principals of technical, trade, textile, and commercial schools, the manager of a telephone school, the head of a department of household economics, several librarians, state, city, and town school superintendents, have all furnished information in regard to work in the several vocations; teachers, nurses, cooks, milliners, dressmakers, and employees in stores, factories, and telephone exchanges have also given many facts as to conditions of work. The book has been written by two teachers who have worked with many young people, and their hope is that it may help girls, who must make their way in the world, to find the work for which they are best fitted by natural ability and by training. Excerpt from Vocational Guidance for Girls Fortunate are we to have from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a book on the vocational guidance of girls. Mrs. Dickson has the all-round life experiences which give her the kind of training needed for a broad and sympathetic approach to the delicate, intricate, and complex problems of woman's life in the swiftly changing social and industrial world. Mrs. Dickson was a teacher for seven years in the grades in the city of New York. She then became the partner of a superintendent of schools in the business of making a home. In these early homemaking years there came from the pen of Mrs. Dickson a series of historical books for the grades which have placed her among the leading educational writers of the country. During the long sickness of her husband she filled for a while two administrative positions - homemaker and superintendent of schools. Her three children are now in high school and are beginning to plan for their own life work. With the broad training of homemaker, wife, mother, teacher, writer, and administrator, Mrs. Dickson has the combination of experiences to enable her to introduce teachers and mothers to the very difficult problems of planning wisely big life careers for our girls. The book is so plainly and guardedly written that it can also be used as a textbook for the girls themselves in connection with civic and vocational courses. The only difficulty with the book for a text is that it is so attractively written on such vital problems that the student will not stop reading at the end of the lesson. Excerpt from The Vocation of Woman This, however, is not an entirely new condition. Women in the middle ages had more education than men. With the aims and aspirations of the pioneers of female education no thoughtful woman will find fault. It was to their credit that they realised the quagmire of uselessness into which, under modern conditions, the middle class portion of their sex was beginning to sink. But it is much to be regretted that they adopted the theory of the equality of man and woman as something to be reached only through the closer intellectual approximation of the sexes, instead of by attempt ing to attain a greater perfection of womanhood. Excerpt from Vocations for Girls There is a manifest desire to increase the vocational content of the school curriculum. Any process of reconstruction of this kind must necessarily be slow. In the meantime, the teachers can do much in their classes towards giving the girl about to leave school a general survey of the field of occupations, helping her to form definite purposes, teaching her how to investigate for herself questions that deal with the choice of a career and the methods of preparation for success along particular lines, directing her attention to the vocational training facilities of the community, showing her how to utilize these, and placing before her an index to vocational literature. From this rapidly accumulating literature, there will be formulated ultimately some definite rules for the scientific management of the individual by the aid of which a worker may be enabled to choose wisely, prepare thoroughly and advance rapidly. Excerpt from Profitable Vocations for Boys The industrial situation demands an increase in the vocational content of the school curriculum. Any proc ess of reconstruction must necessarily be slow. The teachers can, meanwhile, do much in their classes towards giving a boy about to leave school a general survey of the field of occupations, helping him to form a definite purpose, showing him how to investigate ques tions which deal with the' choice of a career and the best methods of preparation for success along par ticular lines, directing his attention to the vocational training facilities of his community, showing him how to utilize them and placing before him an index to vocational literature. From this rapidly accumulating literature there will be formed ultimately some definite rules for the scientific management of the individual by the aid of which the prospective worker may be enabled to choose wisely, prepare thoroughly and advance himself rapidly. The reader of this literature cannot escape the conviction that the apparent maze which leads from the entrance gateway of the many employments that are open to a reasonable degree of prosperity is not as complex as it seems and that there never was a time when the well prepared and determined worker was so sure of a com fortable living as now. On the other hand, it was never so easy for the thoughtless to drift into such hope less industrial situations. An effort has been made to provide in this book a brief summary of the available information relating to the conditions for admission to the chief gainful occupa tions and to present in suggestive forms the best methods by which the workers may prepare themselves and se cure advancement. The earlier editions oi the book were submitted to those who had first-hand information about industrial conditions, and their commendations were generous, and abundant evidence has been supplied by teachers who have tried it for class use and by coun sellors in social centers and by directors of boys' clubs that the book well serves the purposes for which it was designed.
