Mapping The Amazon written by Amanda M. Smith and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Literary Criticism categories.

An analysis of the political and ecological consequences of charting the Amazon River basin in narrative fiction, Mapping the Amazon examines how widely read novels from twentieth-century South America attempted to map the region for readers. Authors such as Jos Eustasio Rivera, Rmulo Gallegos, Mario Vargas Llosa, Csar Calvo, Mrcio Souza, and Mrio de Andrade traveled to the Amazonian regions of their respective countries and encountered firsthand a forest divided and despoiled by the spatial logic of extractivism. Writing against that logic, they fill their novels with geographic, human, and ecological realities omitted from official accounts of the region. Though the plots unfold after the height of the Amazonian rubber boom (1850-1920), the authors construct landscapes marked by that first large-scale exploitation of Amazonian biodiversity. The material practices of rubber extraction repeat in the stories told about the removal of other plants, seeds, and mineral from the forest as well as its conversion into farmland. The counter-discursive impulse of each novel comes into dialogue with various modernizing projects that carve Amazonia into cultural and economic spaces: border commissions, extractive infrastructure, school geography manuals, Indigenous education programs, and touristic propaganda. Even the novel maps studied have blind spots, though, and Mapping the Amazon considers the legacy of such unintentional omissions today.

This is the first guide and introduction to the extraordinary range of languages in Amazonia, which include some of the most the most fascinating in the world and many of which are now teetering on the edge of extinction. Alexandra Aikhenvald, one of the world's leading experts on the region, provides an account of the more than 300 languages. She sets out their main characteristics, compares their common and unique features, and describes the histories and cultures of the people who speak them. The languages abound in rare features. Most have been in contact with each other for many generations, giving rise to complex patterns of linguistic influence. The author draws on her own extensive field research to tease out and analyse the patterns of their genetic and structural diversity. She shows how these patterns reveal the interrelatedness of language and culture; different kinship systems, for example, have different linguistic correlates. Professor Aikhenvald explains the many unusual features of Amazonian languages, which include evidentials, tones, classifiers, and elaborate positional verbs. She ends the book with a glossary of terms, and a full guide for those readers interested in following up a particular language or linguistic phenomenon. The book is free of esoteric terminology, written in its author's characteristically clear style, and brought vividly to life with numerous accounts of her experience in the region. It may be used as a resource in courses in Latin American studies, Amazonian studies, linguistic typology, and general linguistics, and as reference for linguistic and anthropological research.

Fraternity And Social Friendship written by La Civiltà Cattolica and has been published by ucanews this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-27 with Religion categories.

A collection of 09 articles from the October 2020 edition of La Civiltà Cattolica, the highly respected and oldest Catholic journal published from Rome. Signing the historic Document on Human Fraternity in 2019, Pope Francis and Aḥmad al-Tayyeb declared that the only alternative to destructive geopolitics is fraternity. On October 3rd, 2020 the pope signed the encyclical Fratelli Tutti (Brothers and Sisters All). Antonio Spadaro decodes the pope’s third encyclical – that was inspired by the 2019 Document. David Neuhaus, SJ says the Catholic Church has always proceeded cautiously while dealing with the political reality that is the State of Israel. Even though Jews and Catholics share a common set of concepts derived from Scripture, they do not share a common theological understanding of these concepts. In Ritual or Ritualism: The spirit of Confucianism, Benoit Vermander, SJ tries to assimilate what Confucius and his disciples found in the observance of ritualism. The same ritual event can have different meanings. He asks whether these themes are completely outdated today or not. Media ecology approaches communication as an ecosystem. From the mid-19th century, the Catholic Church faced a slow revolution in the communication ecosystem. By 2020, the incursion of the pandemic forced the Church to fully engage with digital media, especially in celebrating the liturgy. Paul A. Soukup, SJ explains the different models of the Church as an ecosystem. In Hagia Sophia: From museum to mosque, Giancarlo Pani SJ elaborates the historical importance of Hagia Sophia as a unique ecumenical space: from basilica to mosque and finally a museum, and now a mosque again.
