Salama, il mercante di una famiglia chiamata «nabatea», poiché discendente dai Nabatei, il popolo dell'antica Petra, è venuto a prendersi Marya, una bella ragazza bianca come il cuore del grano, con occhi limpidi e grandi, ciglia spesse del colore delle notti d'inverno e folti e lunghi capelli. È venuto accompagnato dal fratello minore, noto ai mercanti come «lo Scriba», perché è colui che scrive i contratti commerciali, e come il «Nabateo», sebbene tutti loro siano nabatei. Coi suoi tratti fini e gentili, gli occhi truccati con il kohl, la veste bianca e pulita e il turbante che emana un tenue profumo, il Nabateo, così diverso da Salama che ha la testa piccola e il collo lungo, un leggero strabismo e un naso troppo grande, colpisce al cuore la giovane Marya. Al pensiero di vivere tutta la sua vita con Salama nel deserto e di lasciare sua madre e il Borgo, Marya si rattrista, tuttavia non si ribella al proprio destino. Subito dopo le nozze, parte con la carovana incontro alla sua nuova vita e, durante il duro e faticoso viaggio, apprende le usanze dei mercanti, delle loro tribù, delle loro religioni. Sa che nella Penisola araba è apparso un nuovo Profeta che ha dichiarato guerra agli Ebrei per cacciarli da Yathrib, la futura Madīnat al-Nabī, Medina. Sa che nella famiglia «nabatea» di Salama le religioni sono come gli affluenti del Nilo, numerosissime. Il fratello maggiore del marito è detto hudi, cioè giudìo, perché si è convertito al giudaismo; Salama è cristiano, ma non praticante; la suocera è pagana, devota della dea Allat; e il Nabateo crede in due divinità Allat e El, Madre e Figlio. Ascolta, infine, rapita, le parole del Nabateo sui cicli della vita, la metempsicosi, la compresenza del principio maschile e femminile in tutti gli esseri umani.
