The poems in this collection seek alliances in biology and philosophy, history, sociology, emotion, and experience, in the time of the pandemic. Spirituality and dream-life reside beside science; the metaphysical is put into dialogue with the physical and the political, each informing the other. What can be learned from an open-hearted investigation of a country, a world, on lockdown, that lurches into the non-negotiable new? What rooms of possibility open up in this roiling landscape?

In a single day, everything can change . . . The first in a stunning trilogy of horror, survival, and transformation. There are days when the wind is so biting one can barely curse the cold through chattering teeth. There are days when the sun bakes down and complaints can only roll slowly off weary tongues. There are days filled with superstition; days marked in history; days of remembered significance. This was not one of those days. There was nothing remarkable about it. Even the weather was too average to elicit comment. It was any day. It was every day. And, in many ways, it was the last day. When Mike Allard, a high school history teacher in rural Tennessee, arrived at work, there were some murmurs of illness; students and teachers absent with signs of flu. Even for a newly employed teacher like Mike, a half empty class was a welcome gift. By that night, though, the murmurs grew more panicked. Every television station broadcast wall-to-wall coverage of the sudden outbreak. Before midnight, the word “pandemic” had become insufficient. The Tilian Virus had swept the globe with incomprehensible speed. The government urged patience—explaining that while the symptoms were severe, recovery seemed likely. But then the victims changed. Mothers and fathers, sons and daughters lost what made them human and reverted back to the predatory instincts at the core of existence...In this chilling novel spanning seven years, Mike Allard will lead a small band of people to an unknown end, as he struggles with the futility of survival in a world of withered decay.

“...Andy’s eyes opened. He lay in a crumpled heap at the bottom of the stairs. Slowly he got back on to his feet. Luckily, it seemed like no limbs were broken. The scent of candles mixed with the scent of blood into a strange sweet cocktail. He looked around for something to use as a weapon. Whatever it was that had shoved him down the stairs was not around. It probably hadn’t expected him to survive the fall. The only thing to hand was a heavy old walking stick with an ornately carved handle. It was better than nothing. He resumed the search...” There is a deadly, cold-blooded killer out there who is faster and stronger and always seems one step ahead of the mismatched group of allies who travel across Siberia in search of this monster. Tucked into their luggage is the only weapon on planet Earth capable of stopping it. The mission is simple enough: seek and destroy. But the clock is ticking...

From the Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter, a powerful and cathartic portrait of a country grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic—from feeling afraid and overwhelmed to extraordinary resilient—told through voices of people from all across America The Covid-19 pandemic was a world-shattering event, affecting everyone in the nation. From its first ominous stirrings, renowned journalist Eli Saslow began interviewing a cross-section of Americans to capture their experiences in real time: An exhausted and anguished EMT risking his life in New York City; a grocery store owner feeding his neighborhood for free in locked-down New Orleans; an overwhelmed coroner in Georgia; a Maryland restaurateur forced to close his family business after forty-six years; an Arizona teacher wrestling with her fears and her obligations to her students; rural citizens adamant that the entire pandemic is a hoax, and retail workers attacked for asking customers to wear masks; patients struggling to breathe and doctors desperately trying to save them. Through Saslow's masterful, empathetic interviewing, we are given a kaleidoscopic picture of a people dealing with the unimaginable. These deeply personal accounts constitute a crucial, heartbreaking record of the sweep of experiences during this troubled time, and show us America from its worst and to its resilient best.

Volume I.B An outbreak of a respiratory disease first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and the causative agent was discovered in January 2020 to be a novel betacoronovirus of the same subgenus as SARS-CoV and named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly disseminated worldwide, with clinical manifestations ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia and a fatality rate estimated around 2%. Person to person transmission is occurring both in the community and healthcare settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared the COVID-19 epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. The ongoing outbreak presents many clinical and public health management challenges due to limited understanding of viral pathogenesis, risk factors for infection, natural history of disease including clinical presentation and outcomes, prognostic factors for severe illness, period of infectivity, modes and extent of virus inter-human transmission, as well as effective preventive measures and public health response and containment interventions. There are no antiviral treatment nor vaccine available but fast track research and development efforts including clinical therapeutic trials are ongoing across the world. Managing this serious epidemic requires the appropriate deployment of limited human resources across all cadres of health care and public health staff, including clinical, laboratory, managerial and epidemiological data analysis and risk assessment experts. It presents challenges around public communication and messaging around risk, with the potential for misinformation and disinformation. Therefore, integrated operational research and intervention, learning from experiences across different fields and settings should contribute towards better understanding and managing COVID-19. This Research Topic aims to highlight interdisciplinary research approaches deployed during the COVID-19 epidemic, addressing knowledge gaps and generating evidence for its improved management and control. It will incorporate critical, theoretically informed and empirically grounded original research contributions using diverse approaches, experimental, observational and intervention studies, conceptual framing, expert opinions and reviews from across the world. The Research Topic proposes a multi-dimensional approach to improving the management of COVID-19 with scientific contributions from all areas of virology, immunology, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, therapeutics, communications as well as infection prevention and public health risk assessment and management studies.
