'God, I love these women! Their breeziness, compassion, humour and resilience are a tonic' Libby Purves, Times Literary Supplement In February 1919, London's first women police officers took to the streets of the city. They battled entrenched gender stereotypes, institutional inequality, sexual harassment and assaults disturbingly familiar to those affecting today's #MeToo generation of modern women. Female officers, facing resentment from male colleagues, were expected to do little more than 'Make the tea, luv . . .' and were charged with the sole task of looking after women and children who fell into police hands. Yet, in the course of a century, policewomen have won the equality they demanded, overcome sexism and prejudice, rejected harassment and sexual assaults and smashed through the glass ceiling to lead, rather than follow, their male colleagues. One hundred years on from those first Women Police Constables, a woman, Cressida Dick, holds the most powerful position in British policing, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Voices from the Blue tells the story of the hundred years of service of female police officers within the Metropolitan Police through the voices of the women who fought their way towards equality and won the respect of both their colleagues and the public. The authors have interviewed hundreds of former and serving policewomen and with the co-operation of the Metropolitan Police and the Women's Police Association now have access to the files and stories of thousands of former officers who served over the past hundred years. Those police archives, together with material held by the National Archives and private libraries, provide a detailed and fascinating oral history of the challenges women police officers faced down the years.

Each told by a different troubled narrator, the ten stories in Voices from the Blue Hotel hit emotion head on. They strike the deepest, most troubling emotions, the ones it's impossible to resolve or restrain, the ones that arise mysteriously, linger obnoxiously, and dissipate with excruciating slowness-except that these stories never allow their characters to shake the emotions off. Instead the characters-and stories-pursue their feelings to the nth degree. Children are haunted by the plagues visiting their home one summer. A woman grieves the twin sister she lost as a child and falls in love with a man who will never love her. A musician wanders the streets of Paris searching for and mourning his girlfriend, who may be dead-or may simply have left him forever. Overcome with jealousy, a young woman murders her brother's male lover. A mountain climber retires to the mid-west and aches to reconnect with the family he also disdains. An elderly New Yorker moves to the desert of southern California, where she suddenly and unexpectedly experiences joy. In these stories, feelings sneak up on the characters, leave them stunned and struggling to figure out what's hit them.

Voices From The Blue States written by Mack Williams and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09 with Political Science categories.

In the midst of this dissent-discouraged era-in which the Administration goes to all lengths to hide truth and restrict the flow of information-comes a most timely title: Voices From The Blue States. A collection of essays from people across the country, Voices From The Blue States truly presents Commentary From The Rest of America. "Thought provoking and positive, exciting and illuminating describe 'Voices From The Blue States,' a timely anthology of political essays compiled by Mack Williams." -Terry B., bestselling author of Dancer's Paradise and At Midnight: Choice Fowler's Story. "Voices From the Blue States is an engaging and provocative read, particularly for those who are frustrated with our country's current political climate. An inspirational and passionate mouthpiece, these essays put into words the thoughts and feelings many of us have been experiencing but were perhaps too timid to verbalize. You don't have to be from a Blue State to speak your mind OR enjoy this book." -Crissi Bariatti, B&N. "A compelling look at the state of political affairs in America today." -Jana Johnson Broadie, Founder, Indigo Ink.
