Glossolalia (paranormal speaking in tongues) and zenolalia (paranormal speaking in allegedly foreign languages) are features of many sub-cultures and religions. The most obvious example is Pentecostalism, where every believer in many denominations is expected to speak in tongues at least once – the gift in other cultures being limited to individuals, shamans and mediums. This book, first published in 1978, surveys the practice of ‘speaking in tongues’ in anthropology, Christianity and spiritualism, and provides an analysis of the psychological, theological and linguistic considerations of the phenomenon.

Does consciousness inevitably arise in any sufficiently complex brain? Although widely accepted, this view inherited from Darwin's theory of evolution is supported by surprisingly little evidence. Offering an alternate view of the history of the human mind, Julian Jaynes's ideas challenge our preconceptions of not only the origin of the modern mind, but the origin of gods and religion, the nature of mental illness, and the future potential of consciousness. The tremendous explanatory power of Jaynes's ideas force us to reevaluate much of what we thought we knew about human history.Gods, Voices, and the Bicameral Mind both explains Julian Jaynes's theory and explores a wide range of related topics such as the ancient Dark Age, the nature of dreams and the birth of Greek tragedy, poetic inspiration, the significance of hearing voices in both the ancient and modern world, the development of consciousness in children, vestiges of bicameralism and the transition to consciousness in early Tibet, the relationship of consciousness and metaphorical language, and how Jaynes's ideas compare to those of other thinkers.

There are voices, and there are voices. There is a voice that can dampen your faith, and drown your creativity. On the other hand, there is a voice that can build and challenge your potentials. The voice you hear when you wake up in the morning is very important. It can make or mar your day. It also has the potential to shape your day, and even your life and destiny. Also, there are gods and there are gods. However, there is ONLY ONE TRUE GOD. HE is the Father of the Lord JESUS. This God is real and alive. One of the ways He shows that He is a living God is that He speaks, and He can be heard. The good news is that He still speaks even today and He can also still be heard. His voice is the First Voice. It should be what anyone - man, woman, boy, girl, leader, ruler, peasant, and slave, etc-who desires to fulfil purpose and destiny, should seek and strive to hear at the start of each day. The voice of God is very powerful. It is foundational, and superior to a million voices of men. When He has not spoken, men can boast and feel they are in charge. Situations too can look complex, hopeless and confusing. However, when He has spoken, men's opinions become secondary if not irrelevant! When the Word of God has come forth, and especially ahead of men's, it will be foolish on your part to let men redefine, confuse, and mess you and your day up! This book "THE FIRST VOICE" will show you the importance of making the hearing and heeding of God's voice a priority. On its pages, you will also learn how to hear and recognize God's voice. Vivid instances of divine leading, as well as how God had gradually been shaping the writer's life and destiny are shared. For sequence and easy understanding, this book has been divided into three parts: Part I forms the biblical or conceptual framework for the main subject matter of the book. In Part II, practical issues on hearing, recognizing and heeding God's voice are looked at. In Part III, deeper issues on the benefits of giving priority attention to God's voice, and related issues are considered. As you go through, may you too discover some tools that can help you fulfil your destiny.

Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.
