In his new collection, poet Ariel Dorfman explores death, grief and redemption, hoping that “the light I have invented, the words with which we have all been blessed, will sweeten the death that fast approaches for me.” The famed writer, academic and activist writes about intimate family matters and revisits recurring themes in his work, including war, social justice and climate change. In a series of poems written from the perspective of deceased historical figures to contemporary politicians and soldiers, he warns about the need for reckoning and atonement. In one, Pablo Picasso speaks to Colin Powell, asking why his famous painting depicting the horror of war, Guernica, was covered when the secretary of state spoke about the invasion of Iraq at the United Nations. “Were you afraid that the mother / would leap from her image and say / no he is the one / they are the ones who will bomb / from afar / they are the ones who will kill / the child.” In another, Salvador Allende encourages Barack Obama to fight for his beliefs, “So that when you arrive on these shores / and look back as I do, you will have no regrets.” Others explore connections to loved ones, including “the love of my life, Angelica, the woman who helped me survive exile and tribulations and peopled my world with hope.” He writes about the passionate love the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan felt for his wife, which led to the construction of the Taj Mahal, and imagines conversations between William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, who died within hours of each other. Neither escaped the iron rule of mortality: “The story of our own death is the one experience we are unable to transmit to anybody else.” Though written by an internationally acclaimed intellectual, these incredibly moving poems share the most human of emotions and expose Dorfman’s vulnerability as he embarks on the last leg of his journey.

"Death does not respect status or age. It often comes as a thief in the night, unexpectedly robbing the vicim of life and leaving friends and relatives bewildered and bereft. Who among us has not lost someone we loved? And who does not long to make contact with that loved person again - to know that they still live, but in another dimension? After the sudden death of her son Paul, Judith Chisholm learned that death is not the end, but a change of form. That our loved ones are waiting for us a heartbeat away in another world. She tells the story of her journey from death and despair to revelation and hope. We read how, in the years since his death, she has used paranormal phenomena first discovered half a century ago to record Paul's voice on a tape recorder. It is an experience many others have shared. The book explains in detail how the procedure works. It can be tested by anyone who wishes to: it is the only known psychic phenomenon that it is repeatable! Readers can try for themselves to open channels of communbication with their own loved ones who have crossd the divide between this life and their new life on the other side. While there is no guarantee, it can certainly be said to work for many."--Publisher's description.

When author Harvest moon eyes decided to spend the winter of 1995 in Seattle, Washington, it was with the intention of writing a simple love story. A series of bizarre events unfolded and instead she found herself spending the winter on the streets with Seattles homeless. As Seattles homeless shared their background, opinions, and political viewpoints, Harvest moon eyes began to examine her life, prejudices and failures. Voices From The Other Side is her journal: a spiritual metamorphosis interwoven between unaltered-recorded conversations, which expose the rawness of the streets; and the emotions and thoughts the author tried to keep hidden, as well as delivering a timeless, compelling message to our politicians.

Over the last several decades, video testimony with aging Holocaust survivors has brought these witnesses into the limelight. Yet the success of these projects has made it seem that little survivor testimony took place in earlier years. In truth, thousands of survivors began to recount their experience at the earliest opportunity. This book provides the first full-length case study of early postwar Holocaust testimony, focusing on David Boder's 1946 displaced persons interview project. In July 1946, Boder, a psychologist, traveled to Europe to interview victims of the Holocaust who were in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps and what he called "shelter houses." During his nine weeks in Europe, Boder carried out approximately 130 interviews in nine languages and recorded them on a wire recorder. Likely the earliest audio recorded testimony of Holocaust survivors, the interviews are valuable today for the spoken word (that of the DP narrators and of Boder himself) and also for the song sessions and religious services that Boder recorded. Eighty sessions were eventually transcribed into English, most of which were included in a self-published manuscript. Alan Rosen sets Boder's project in the context of the postwar response to displaced persons, sketches the dramatic background of his previous life and work, chronicles in detail the evolving process of interviewing both Jewish and non-Jewish DPs, and examines from several angles the implications for the history of Holocaust testimony. Such early postwar testimony, Rosen avers, deserves to be taken on its own terms rather than to be enfolded into earlier or later schemas of testimony. Moreover, Boder's efforts and the support he was given for them demonstrate that American postwar response to the Holocaust was not universally indifferent but rather often engaged, concerned, and resourceful.
