Chicana/o history has reached an intriguing juncture. While academic and intellectual studies are embracing new, highly nuanced perspectives on race, class, gender, education, identity, and community, the field itself continues to be viewed as a battleground, subject to attacks from outside academia by those who claim that the discipline promotes racial hatred and anti-Americanism. Against a backdrop of deportations and voter suppression targeting Latinos, A Promising Problem presents the optimistic voices of scholars who call for sophisticated solutions while embracing transnationalism and the reality of multiple, overlapping identities. The interdisciplinary essays in Decolonial Voices discuss racialized, subaltern, feminist, and diasporic identities and the aesthetic politics of hybrid and mestiza/o cultural productions. This book tells of story of a groundbreaking event in Chicano history. Here, for the first time, is the complete history of "Con Safos: Reflections of Life in the Barrio" the first ever Chicano literary magazine. Created by a legendary group of furiously independent barrio intellectuals and artists, connected to no established group and working on their own dime,10 magazine issues were produced in the late 1960s and 1970s in East Los Angeles. Many writers and artists who would later become well-known were first published in "Con Safos." Bilingual, using Calo' and the slang of the barrios, "Con Safos" helped to bring to attention an important inner vision of the barrio, Mexican American family life, "El Movimiento" --the Chicano civil rights protest movement-- and "El Moratorium" the Chicano movement against the Vietnam War. It used humor as its sword to tilt at establishment windmills. It made fun of everything--even itself as it took on the most serious questions of the day including racism and discrimination. There were those that hated it and those that loved it, but everybody read it. As it became the "Voice of the Barrio" it helped create a Chicano aesthetic enhancing the much-needed development of Chicano identity. In the last chapter, "Con Safos" "vatos" tell what they are doing now. Their contemporary lives reflect and illuminate the persistence of creativity through the life span in these Chicano men.

Who is Bert Corona? Though not readily identified by most Americans, nor indeed by many Mexican Americans, Corona is a man of enormous political commitment whose activism has spanned much of this century. Now his voice can be heard by the wide audience it deserves. In this landmark publication—the first autobiography by a major figure in Chicano history—Bert Corona relates his life story. Corona was born in El Paso in 1918. Inspired by his parents' participation in the Mexican Revolution, he dedicated his life to fighting economic and social injustice. An early labor organizer among ethnic communities in southern California, Corona has agitated for labor and civil rights since the 1940s. His efforts continue today in campaigns to organize undocumented immigrants. This book evolved from a three-year oral history project between Bert Corona and historian Mario T. García. The result is a testimonio, a collaborative autobiography in which historical memories are preserved more through oral traditions than through written documents.
