This volume provides a diachronic and synchronic overview of linguistic variability and change in involved, speech-related and spoken texts in English. While previous works on the topic have focused on more limited time periods, this book covers data from the 16th century up to the present day. The studies offer new insights into historical and present-day corpus pragmatics by identifying and exploring features of orality in a variety of registers. For readers who are new to the field, the range of approaches will provide a helpful overview; for readers who are already familiar with the field, the volume will shed light on the complexity of factors such as register, sociolinguistic variability and language attitude, thus making it a useful resource and stepping stone for further exploration. The volume celebrates the groundbreaking contributions of Professor Merja Kytö in making accessible speech-related corpus material and leading the way in its exploration.

Using top Chinese and American airlines as examples, this book approaches the construction of corporate identities on social media, a critical issue in corporate communication, from a cross-cultural multimodal perspective. Through a holistic and systematic multimodal analysis, it provides a comprehensive cross-cultural understanding of corporate identity construction on social media. By developing an integrated social semiotic framework based on registerial cartography in SFL, it investigates the airlines’ registerial activity patterns in terms of macro-level configuration and micro-level multimodal realizations, interprets their situated contextual patterns that delineate the construction of corporate identities and further explains the influence of cultural factors. Given that this book offers theoretical contributions to corporate identity and cross-cultural communication research, practical guidance on PR practices, especially in the context of Chinese enterprises going global, and pedagogical insights for business communication courses, this book will be of particular benefit to researchers in linguistics, management and communication studies, PR practitioners, and both lecturers and learners of business communication courses.

Cultural Linguistics And Re Conceptualized Tradition written by Judit Baranyiné Kóczy and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-16 with Social Science categories.

This book offers a cutting-edge compilation of studies on (re)conceptualized traditions in a wide variety of discourses such as the language of emotion, folklore, religion and morality, the natural environment, idioms and proverbs. It also raises complex theoretical and methodological questions regarding the cultural-cognitive linguistic approach to metaphors and figurative language, embodiment, diachronic and corpus linguistics, and pragmatics. The languages under scrutiny range from well-documented to minority varieties, and even to endangered languages and dialects. Building from the assertion that cultural conceptualizations are rendered as manifestations of the interplay between language, culture, and the collective cognition of communities as handed down from generation to generation, this edited book discovers and rebuilds traditional cultural cognition. Employing analytical tools provided by the cultural-cognitive linguistic framework, the authors investigate how the field is being revitalized and renegotiated in present-day cultural contexts, and how it contributes to shaping our contemporary understanding of the world. It is useful for academics and students interested in cultural and cognitive linguistics, ethnosemantics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, applied linguistics, linguistic anthropology, and religious studies. The Sociophonetics Of Dublin English written by Marion Schulte and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Sociophonetics of Dublin English shows how social inequalities and language are connected by the stances speakers take in interaction. It is based on an instrumental phonetic analysis of recorded interviews and broadcasting data and a detailed qualitative account of the same data as well as the socio-cultural context in Ireland. The analysis not only considers macro-social categories but also pragmatic norms and situational, more fluid aspects of communication. Contemporary social meanings and associated phonetic realisations are described and explained as the result of diachronic developments. Since the independence of Ireland local pronunciations have been re-evaluated and realisations connected with the former coloniser have fallen out of use even in formal and powerful domains. This investigation thus highlights the importance of diachronic data to understand contemporary sociolinguistic variation.

Corpus Approaches To Discourse In Forensic And Legal Contexts written by David Wright and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-20 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book is the first of its kind to bridge the gap between corpus linguistics and forensic linguistics, illustrating the value of applying corpus linguistic data, tools, and methods in the analysis of language in the law, evidence, crime, and justice. The volume begins by taking stock of the use of corpus linguistics in the field of forensic and legal linguistics over its roughly thirty-year history as a foundation for critically reflecting on the current state-of play within the discipline. Wright uses this discussion as a jumping-off point from which to demonstrate the opportunities and challenges of using corpora and corpus methods to analyse language in legal and forensic contexts and offers possible solutions to collecting and analysing types of data that are typically not in the public domain. The five analysis chapters that follow apply corpus method to both established and emerging areas of forensic and legal linguistics, summarized in a concluding chapter which also looks ahead to future directions for the interface of the two fields. This book will be key reading for graduate students and researchers in forensic linguistics and corpus linguistics methods as well as scholars working across disciplines interested in the intersection between language and the law.

Political Argumentation In Early America written by Juhani Rudanko and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-19 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book investigates the language used by protagonists in four major political debates in the early history of the United States. The first of these concerns the controversy in the first United States House of Representatives in the summer of 1789 on whether a proposal for a bill of rights should be considered in an expeditious fashion or whether the issue should be left till much later. The second is the principal debate on whether a sedition act should be enacted in July 1798, and the third concerns the enactment of the Logan Act of 1799. The fourth investigates the elections for the Legislature of the State of New York in the spring of 1800, which was the key event affecting the outcome of the presidential election of 1800. In each case there was a sharp disagreement between groups of politicians representing different points of view, and each event was significant from the point of view of the political history of the United States. The authors introduce these four debates, as well as the notion of informal fallacy - taken to designate an argument that is unsatisfactory in some way - before analysing deceptive fallacies and demonstrating how fallacy theory can be used as a critical tool in the examination of political argumentation. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political communication, rhetoric and argumentation, US history and politics, and diachronic linguistics, especially diachronic pragmatics.
