Ceci n'est pas un livre d'Histoire. C'est un livre d'histoires au pluriel. C'est moi debout face à ces histoires. C'est un face à face entre eux, tous ces disparus, toute cette horreur et moi, écrivant. J'ai voulu dialoguer avec eux, ici, maintenant. C'est parti d'un réel besoin, individuel et politique sans prétendre à aucune vérité. C'est ce que je devais faire. C'est tout. Je crois, avec d'autres, que ce génocide central du XXème siècle est sans commune mesure dans l'histoire de l'humanité et qu'à ce titre, en tant qu'artiste, je deviens témoin des témoins. Re-transcrire. Ré-ordonner en désordonnant aussi. Peut-être me fallait-il violenter la violence elle-même, pour lui extirper autre chose que ce qu'on comprend ou ressent immédiatement. Lui résister à cette violence des faits pour en réchapper et offrir d'autres possibles par des phénomènes de renversement. Tout au long du travail qui a commencé en 1994, ce furent tour à tour ou parallèlement, la Yougoslavie, le Rwanda, l'Algérie et évidemment beaucoup d’autres événements. Il s'est agi de re-transcrire les perceptions de toutes ces réalités mêlées, mêlées aussi avec ma propre histoire, soit tout ce qui se passe dans la vie de chacun en fonction de ses activités physiques et psychiques. Ça s'entrecroise. C'est en mouvement. C'est un mouvement incessant d'affleurements et de retraits. Chris Meunier De ce temps-là à ce temps-ci le livre se déplie, s'invente, s'architecture. Où se situer dans les langues et leur vocabulaire ? Inventer d'autres mots ou se contenter de ceux qui existent ? Ces expériences engagent l'artiste, l'auteur, à trouver sa propre parole dans le désir de transmettre à son tour. Le livre alors se crée. In a crucial shift within posthumanistic media studies, Bernhard Siegert dissolves the concept of media into a network of operations that reproduce, displace, process, and reflect the distinctions fundamental for a given culture. Cultural Techniques aims to forget our traditional understanding of media so as to redefine the concept through something more fundamental than the empiricist study of a medium’s individual or collective uses or of its cultural semantics or aesthetics. Rather, Siegert seeks to relocate media and culture on a level where the distinctions between object and performance, matter and form, human and nonhuman, sign and channel, the symbolic and the real are still in the process of becoming. The result is to turn ontology into a domain of all that is meant in German by the word Kultur. Cultural techniques comprise not only self-referential symbolic practices like reading, writing, counting, or image-making. The analysis of artifacts as cultural techniques emphasizes their ontological status as “in-betweens,” shifting from firstorder to second-order techniques, from the technical to the artistic, from object to sign, from the natural to the cultural, from the operational to the representational. Cultural Techniques ranges from seafaring, drafting, and eating to the production of the sign-signaldistinction in old and new media, to the reproduction of anthropological difference, to the study of trompe-l’oeils, grids, registers, and doors. Throughout, Siegert addresses fundamental questions of how ontological distinctions can be replaced by chains of operations that process those alleged ontological distinctions within the ontic. Grounding posthumanist theory both historically and technically, this book opens up a crucial dialogue between new German media theory and American postcybernetic discourses.

Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
