Wat deden arbeiders rond 1900 in hun vrije tijd? Niet veel goeds, is het idee. Uit een onderzoek naar Schiedam - Zwart Nazareth genoemd vanwege de zwarte walmen van de brandersindustrie - blijkt echter dat het alarmerende beeld rond het volksvermaak dat de volksverheffers opriepen, vaak overtrokken was. Ondanks de moeilijke omstandigheden was er in Schiedam sprake van een verrassend gevarieerd aanbod. De arbeiders maakten niet alleen gebruik van bekend volksvermaak als de bioscoop, cafés, dansen, de kermis, straatleven, sport, maar gingen ook naar bibliotheken en lezingen, er waren bloeiende muziek- en toneelverenigingen en er was (beschaafd) vermaak in parken. Arbeiders wisten hun eigen vermaak te organiseren en lieten zich niet zomaar zaken opleggen van bovenaf. Er was rond de vrijetijdsbesteding sprake van een wisselwerking tussen het gemeentebestuur, particuliere autoriteiten, exploitanten/ondernemers en arbeiders, waarbij de autoriteiten opvallend vaak concessies moesten doen. Vanwege financiële belangen ontstonden soms verrassende coalities.

This dramatic memoir traces Herman Bodson's transformation from a pacifist and scientist to, in his own words, "a cold fighter and a killer" in the Belgian underground, an expert in explosives and sabotage. Serving first in the OMBR (Office Militaire Belge de Resistance), he later formed a group of underground fighters in the Belgian Ardennes. They undertook blowing up military trains and installations - including the sabotage of a bridge which resulted in the deaths of some six hundred German soldiers - cutting German communication lines, and rescuing downed American fliers. Bodson also served as a medical aide to an American military doctor at Bastogne in the crucial days of the Battle of the Bulge.
