Los ensayos reunidos en este volumen se concentran en la producción de narrativa de ficción, novela y cuento, y ofrecen una cobertura amplia de esta producción desde el año 1920 al año 2000. Los ensayos han sido distribuidos en tres secciones. El material de la primera ofrece lo que normalmente entendemos como una forma reconocible de presentar el origen y desarrollo de la narrativa contemporánea en el Perú. Se trata, en gran medida, de asuntos, géneros, obras y autores a partir de los cuales se ha definido el canon de esta narrativa a lo largo de las décadas de 1920 y 1970. La segunda sección propone visiones alternativas: presenta cuatro estudios que retan la integridad de una narrativa pensada dentro de las coordenadas del cauce central. Evidencian la insuficiencia de esa perspectiva al hacer visible una vasta producción que plantea cuestiones y problemas fundamentales, tanto en lo referente a los ámbitos de la representación como a las formas de la experiencia y la imaginación sociales activas a lo largo del siglo XX. Se concentran estos ensayos en aspectos específicos atendiendo a criterios de género o etnia, o enfatizando modos narrativos opacados y redefiniendo el ámbito de representación más allá de la dicotomía costa-sierra. La tercera sección está dedicada a una coyuntura particular, las dos décadas que cierran el siglo XX: las raíces del presente. Aquí podemos observar la compleja articulación de distintas épocas y sensibilidades: vemos la multiplicación de canales y la presencia en escena de una multitud de autores y de agendas narrativas e ideológicas, así como también diferentes entonaciones en el diálogo con la tradición literaria. El propósito de esta estructuración es sugerir posibles lecturas del corpus, y dar cuenta de distintas interpretaciones del origen y desarrollo de la narrativa contemporánea en el Perú.

Peru, which in this century has produced world-renowned novelists of the stature of Mario Vargas Llosa and José María Arguedas, and poets such as the avant-garde CésarVallejo, possesses a distinctive and varied literary culture of great intrinsic value. Peru's Spanish colonial past connects it to the mainstream of Western literature; but native traditions have survived and continue to flourish, both in Quechua and in Spanish. Attempts to evade the colonial heritage gave rise to a literature which at first was limited to expressing the ethos of Lima's middle classes, but later broadened out to reflect regional values and give a voice to marginal sectors in Peruvian society. A History of Peruvian Literature sets in context and appraises, with ample quotation and analysis, all of the more significant Peruvian writings from the Renaissance onwards. The native tradition, the colonial period and the nineteenth century are the subjects of the first three chapters; then four chapters are devoted to the twentieth century, when Peruvian literary output is astonishing in its range, adventurousness and quality. All Spanish quoted is translated into English, the poetry in James Higgins' excellent verse; full bibliographies are provided for each author discussed.

If there was not so much fiction in News from the Empire, it could be called a work of history. In fact, the focus of this broad work is history itself, as well as the many unrecorded lives and events that history has forgotten from this strange era in Mexico's early nationhood. Using Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Carlota, as a starting point, Fernando Del Paso both considers what Mexico is and the country's place in the larger narrative of world history. The book spans the palaces of Europe and the villages of Mexico, yet despite its broad focus News is a book rich in characters and details, a work that opens up this era of Mexican history to readers without specialized knowledge. Maximilian and Carlota are the focus of the book, and even if they are not explicitly on every page, they are always in the background somewhere, providing the humanizing contradictions that fill it. Del Paso draws a complicated picture of two naïve people placed in a situation they could not manage and a country they did not understand. This innocence is especially inexplicable in the case of Maximilian, who, as brother of Austria's Emperor Franz Josef, should have known something about ruling but is completely unable to govern.
