Die in vielen Museen der DDR präsentierte „Geschichte der Urgesellschaft" war ein fester Bestandteil des nationalen Geschichtsbilds des „Arbeiter- und Bauernstaats" und unterstützte die historische Legitimierung der SED-Diktatur. Allerdings besaß die sozialistische Urgeschichtserzählung mit dem in der NS-Zeit propagierten Bild der „Germanischen Vorzeit" ein ideologisch hoch belastetes Erbe. Die Museen standen angesichts des politisch verordneten Antifaschismus vor der Aufgabe, in ihren Ausstellungen den narrativen Turn vom „germanischen" zum marxistischen Urgeschichtsbild zu meistern. Entlang eines umfangreichen Korpus an Ausstellungsfotos analysiert die Studie die museale Darstellung der Urgeschichte in der SBZ und DDR sowie die Diskurse, die zum Wandel oder zur Beständigkeit von Geschichtsbildern führten.

Fünf Kapitel schlagen thematische Schneisen in das komplexe Feld einer ostdeutschen Museumshistoriografie zwischen 1949 und 1989: von museumspolitischen Rahmenstrukturen und internationalen Museumsbeziehungen über spezifische Formen der Museumsgestaltung und systembedingte Sammelstrategien bis hin zur Funktion einzelner Museumstypen. Durch Berücksichtigung jeweils verschiedener Phasen der DDR-Geschichte – von der SBZ und frühen DDR über die Ulbricht-Zeit bis zu Honecker und den 1980er Jahren – weist die Publikation zugleich auf Wandlungen und Entwicklungen wie auf mögliche Nischen und Freiräume hin. Pre-modern critical interactions of nature and society can best be studied during the so-called "Crisis of the 14th Century". While historiography has long ignored the environmental framing of historcial processes and scientists have over-emphasized nature's impact on the course of human history, this volume tries to describe the at times complex modes of the late-medieval relationship of man and nature. The idea of 'teleconnection', borrowed from the geosciences, describes the influence of atmospheric circulation patterns often over long distances. It seems that there were 'teleconnections' in society, too. So this volumes aims to examine man-environment interactions mainly in the 14th century from all over Europe and beyond. It integrates contributions from different disciplines on impact, perception and reaction of environmental change and natural extreme events on late Medieval societies. For humanists from all historical disciplines it offers an approach how to integrate written and even scientific evidence on environmental change in established and new fields of historical research. Despite the growing interest in general European history, the European dimension is surprisingly absent from the writing of contemporary history. In most countries, the historiography on the 20th century continues to be dominated by national perspectives. Although there is cross-national work on specific topics such as occupation or resistance, transnational conceptions and narratives of contemporary European history have yet to be worked out. This volume focuses on the development of a shared conception of recent European history that will be required as an underpinning for further economic and political integration so as to make lasting cooperation on the old continent possible. It tries to overcome the traditional national framing that ironically persists just at a time when organized efforts to transform Europe from an object of debate to an actual subject have some chance of succeeding in making it into a polity in its own right.
