Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Praktische (Ethik, Ästhetik, Kultur, Natur, Recht, ...), , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Allgemein bezeichnet ‚Gedächtnis’ eine subjektive Fähigkeit, bestimmte Erfahrungen, Ideen und Informationen möglichst für längere Zeit in Erinnerung zu bewahren. Diese Fähigkeit des Individuums wird in den Sozial-, Kultur- und Geschichtswissenschaften unterschiedlich thematisiert. Dabei wird das Gedächtnisvermögen zwar dem individuellen Bewusstsein zuerkannt. Gleichwohl weisen die Wissenschaftler auch auf die konstitutive Rolle hin, die kulturelle und soziale Faktoren für die Gedächtnisbildung insbesondere in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte spielen. Danach wird dem Gedächtnis die Doppelfunktion zugewiesen, persönliche Erinnerungen mit den Erfahrungen zu verbinden, die den meisten Menschen in einer Gesellschaft gemeinsam sind. Die Anwendung der Kategorie kollektives Gedächtnis mag in manchen wissenschaftlichen Zusammenhängen zulässig erscheinen, doch sie ist nicht nur philosophisch, sondern auch im Hinblick auf den Kolonialismus problematisch. Im kolonialen System standen sich Europäer als vorsätzliche Täter und Afrikaner als unschuldige Opfer gegenüber, d.h. sie standen stets in einem Konfliktverhältnis zueinander. Kolonisierte und Kolonisierer konnten deshalb kein gemeinsames Gedächtnis kultivieren, weil ihre Erfahrungen mit der Kolonisation und ihre Erinnerungen an jene Zeit konträr und unvereinbar sind.

This study recounts the reasons why the order for the Herero genocide was very likely issued by the Kaiser himself, and why proof of this has not emerged before now. In 1904, the indigenous Herero people of German South West Africa (now Namibia) rebelled against their German occupiers. In the following four years, the German army retaliated, killing between 60,000 and 100,000 Herero people, one of the worst atrocities ever. The history of the Herero genocide remains a key issue for many around the world partly because the German policy not to pay reparations for the Namibian genocide contrasts with its long-standing Holocaust reparations policy. The Herero case bears not only on transitional justice issues throughout Africa, but also on legal issues elsewhere in the world where reparations for colonial injustices have been called for. This book explores the events within the context of German South West Africa (GSWA) as the only German colony where settlement was actually attempted. The study contends that the genocide was not the work of one rogue general or the practices of the military, but that it was inexorably propelled by Germany's national goals at the time. The book argues that the Herero genocide was linked to Germany's late entry into the colonial race, which led it frenetically and ruthlessly to acquire multiple colonies all over the world within a very short period, using any means available. Jeremy Sarkin is Chairperson-Rapporteur of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, and is at present Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. He is also an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa and of the State of New York. This is the first paperback edition of a book which originally appeared under the title "South-West Africa Under German Rule", and appears with a new introduction by the author. The history of Namibia offers many parallels to developments in other European colonies. The settlers, with a greater or lesser use of force, established themselves in the country and their confrontation with the African population often culminated in rebellion in the area of major settlement; a European settler community would then consolidate itself over the ruins left by military conquest. The pattern was repeated in Namibia during the Nama and Herero wars. Helmut Bley shows how the roots of German totalitarianism stem from the colonial period. He provides a picture of how social insecurity, bureaucracy and rigid economic thinking produced the racialism and the extremism of the last years of German rule. The abuse of the Africans provided the roots of the abuse of the Jews.
