Schleiermacher is now regarded as an influential figure in the history of Christian thought, theories and methods in religious studies, and hermeneutics. The German-language critical edition of his work beginning in 1980, Schleiermacher Kritische Gesamtausgabe, and English translations of key portions of his corpus beginning in the late nineteenth century, have allowed scholars to investigate the richness of his thought. German scholars have often focused on Schleiermacher's ties to early modern philosophy, his aesthetics, hermeneutics, and theory of religion, while English-speaking scholars have often focused on the theological influences and implications of Schleiermacher's work. Das Verhältnis von Religion und Individualität ist die exemplarische Theoriegestalt einer religionsphilosophischen Innovation aus der Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert. Schleiermacher gehört unbestritten zu den Pionieren dieses Themas. Ziel dieser Studie ist, die Entwicklung des Verweisungszusammenhangs von Religion und Individualität bei Schleiermacher zu untersuchen, wie sie sich in seinen beiden werkgeschichtlichen Prägephasen dokumentiert. In seiner frühromantischen Werkphase entdeckt er die Interdependenz von Religion und Individualität in kritisch-konstruktiver Aneignung von zeitgenössischen Theoriekonstellationen und führt sie in eine erste Theoriegestalt über. Mit seiner heute als Kulturtheorie rezipierten Philosophischen Ethik hat er das mehrdimensionale Thema nicht etwa in den Hintergrund treten lassen, sondern vielmehr in einem handlungstheoretisch und ethisch entfalteten System ausgebaut. Die Rekonstruktion der tiefen Kontinuität des Wechselverhältnisses von Religion und Individualität im Übergang von seiner frühromantischen Werkphase zu seiner Philosophischen Ethik ist daher auch ein wichtiger Beitrag zum Verständnis von Schleiermachers gedanklicher Entwicklung von den Reden über die Religion (1799) zur Glaubenslehre (1830/31).
