How technological advances and colonial fears inspired utopian geoengineering projects during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries From the 1870s to the mid-twentieth century, European explorers, climatologists, colonial officials, and planners were avidly interested in large-scale projects that might actively alter the climate. Uncovering this history, Desert Edens looks at how arid environments and an increasing anxiety about climate in the colonial world shaped this upsurge in ideas about climate engineering. From notions about the transformation of deserts into forests to Nazi plans to influence the climates of war-torn areas, Philipp Lehmann puts the early climate change debate in its environmental, intellectual, and political context, and considers the ways this legacy reverberates in the present climate crisis. Lehmann examines some of the most ambitious climate-engineering projects to emerge in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Confronted with the Sahara in the 1870s, the French developed concepts for a flooding project that would lead to the creation of a man-made Sahara Sea. In the 1920s, German architect Herman Sörgel proposed damming the Mediterranean in order to geoengineer an Afro-European continent called “Atlantropa,” which would fit the needs of European settlers. Nazi designs were formulated to counteract the desertification of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Despite ideological and technical differences, these projects all incorporated and developed climate change theories and vocabulary. They also combined expressions of an extreme environmental pessimism with a powerful technological optimism that continue to shape the contemporary moment. Focusing on the intellectual roots, intended effects, and impact of early measures to modify the climate, Desert Edens investigates how the technological imagination can be inspired by pressing fears about the environment and civilization.

Heimat has been a crucial concept for the construction of identity in the German-speaking world. Seemingly impossible to translate, Heimat has served to describe feelings of comfort and belonging that are traditionally tied to a specific location, be it one’s place of birth or childhood home. Yet, in a world characterized by ever increasing global influences and a fast-paced lifestyle, the notion of Heimat as a static, inflexible and rather exclusionary idea is becoming more and more obsolete and is giving way to new hybrid Heimat forms that encompass traditional as well as foreign elements. Thus, Heimat can no longer be perceived as a solely German concept but is rapidly merging binary opposites, shaping Germans’ understandings of home in new and unexpected ways. The nine essays in this anthology explore these hybrid forms of Heimat in our globalized world from multiple angles. Some take a look at traditional genres of Heimat like the Heimatfilm or Heimatroman and examine how contemporary filmmakers (Tom Tykwer, Fatih Akın) and authors (Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Hugo Loetscher) have appropriated those genres to arrive at an updated version of Heimat in the 21st century. Other articles focus on gendered readings of Heimat and show how Mo Asumang’s Roots Germania and Ula Stöckl’s Das alte Lied emancipate the term from its nurturing, motherly qualities and instead provide women—including women of color—with powerful agency. Finally, contributors explore Heimat in the regional and historical contexts of East and West Germany, Switzerland and Romania. In the process, this anthology inscribes itself into the ongoing discourse on Heimat and enriches it by showing how the current notion of Heimat transcends traditional boundaries of nation, culture and race.

Der Band Von Richthofen bis Remarque ergänzt und schließt formal und inhaltlich an den von Hans Wagener 1997 herausgegebenen Band zur deutschen Kriegsprosa nach 1945, Von Böll bis Buchheim (Amsterdamer Beiträge zur neueren Germanistik 42), an, indem die Beiträge einzelne deutschsprachige Prosatexte zum I. Weltkrieg thematisieren. Der Schwerpunkt der Analyse in den 23 Beiträgen liegt auf den in den repräsentativen Beispieltexten vermittelten Kriegsbildern und bezieht die Rezeption der Texte und ihre Wirksamkeit für das Bild vom I. Weltkrieg sowohl in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit als auch in der Gegenwart ein. Unter der Prämisse der Analyse der Wandlung des Bildes vom ‘modernen’ Krieg, als dessen paradigmatisches Beispiel der I. Weltkrieg bis heute gilt, in der deutschsprachigen Kriegsprosa beschränkt sich die Auswahl der Texte nicht nur auf die heute dem Kanon der Kriegsliteratur zugerechneten Texte (Remarque, Renn, Koeppen etc.). Mit einbezogen werden Texte, die aufgrund ihrer Verbreitung (Plüschow, Flex, Richthofen, Zöberlein), ihrer kontroversen Rezeption (Carossa, Vogel) oder der vermeintlich historisch-’authentischen’ Darstellung (Schlachten des Weltkrieges) zur Diskussion um das ‘wahre’ Bild des Krieges in der Weimarer Republik und bis in die Gegenwart beigetragen haben. This book examines Nazi Germany's expansion, population management and establishment of a racially stratified society within the Reichsgaue (Reich Districts) of Wartheland and Danzig-West Prussia in annexed Poland (1939-1945) through a colonial lens. The topic of the Holocaust has thus far dominated the scholarly debate on the relevance of colonialism for our understanding of the Nazi regime. However, as opposed to solely concentrating on violence to investigate whether the Holocaust can be located within wider colonial frameworks, Rachel O'Sullivan utilizes a broader approach by investigating other aspects, such as discourses and fantasies related to expansion, settlement, 'civilising missions' and Germanisation, which were also intrinsic to Nazi Germany's rule in Poland. The resettlement of the ethnic Germans-individuals of German descent who lived in Eastern Europe until the outbreak of the Second World War-forms a main focal point for this study's analysis and investigation of colonial comparisons. The ethnic German resettlement in the Reichsgaue laid the foundations for the establishment and enforcement of German society and culture, while simultaneously intensifying the efforts to control Poles and remove Jews. Through this case study, O'Sullivan explores Nazi Germany's dual usage of inclusionary policies, which attempted to culturally and linguistically integrate ethnic Germans and certain Poles into German society, and the contrasting exclusionary policies, which sought to rid annexed Poland of 'undesirable' population groups through segregation, deportation and murder. The book compares these policies - and the tactics used to implement them - to colonial and settler colonial methods of assimilation, subjugation and violence.

Der Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges liegt mehr als 50 Jahre zurück. Bis heute haben aber die Fragen, mit denen dieses katastrophale Ereignis alle Deutschen konfrontiert, nicht an Bedeutung und Aktualität verloren. Vielmehr fordert das öffentliche Gedächtnis mit jedem Generationswechsel neue Bilder von diesem Krieg. Im Rückblick auf den Zeitraum seit 1945 läßt sich ein Zyklus von Erinnern, Verstummen und erneutem Erinnern ausmachen, der bereits dreifach durchlaufen worden ist. Insofern ist der Umgang mit dem Thema in den deutschen Medien gleich nach Kriegsende auch für die Gegenwart aufschlußreich. Deutungen und Formen des Gedenkens, die heute praktiziert werden, haben selber inzwischen eine Geschichte. Mehrfach glaubte man bereits in beiden Teilen Deutschlands, daß die Schuldfrage gelöst sei und die Kriegserfahrung bewältigt. Jedesmal stellte sich heraus, daß die Deutschen noch immer in der Schuld sind, nicht nur aus der Perspektive ihrer europäischen Nachbarn. Die Beiträge in diesem Band gehen auf den Anfang eines unabgeschlossenen Prozesses zurück. Die Befragung gilt nicht den Menschen, sondern den Medien. Gefragt wird, wie in der Literatur, in der Presse, im Fernsehen und Film in den 40er und 50er Jahren mit dem Krieg umgegangen worden ist, welche Bilder davon die Literatur, die Presse, Fernsehen, Film und Hörspiel anzubieten hatten und welche Tendenzen sich dabei in den beiden deutschen Staaten, in Österreich, Polen und Frankreich nachweisen lassen. Eine Reflexion auf die neunziger Jahre macht das Thema spannend, denn dadurch wird den Bildern vom Krieg, die im wiedervereinigten Deutschland im Umlauf sind, ihr Ort im Zyklus zugewiesen: Ein Beitrag zur wieder nötig gewordenen Orientierung.
