Continuing its distinguished tradition of focusing on central political, sociological, and cultural issues of Jewish life in the last century, Volume XXVI of the annual Studies in Contemporary Jewry examines the visual revolution that has overtaken Jewish cultural life in the twentieth century onwards, with special attention given to the evolution of Jewish museums. Bringing together leading curators and scholars, Visualizing and Exhibiting Jewish Space and History treats various forms of Jewish representation in museums in Europe and the United States before the Second World War and inquires into the nature and proliferation of Jewish museums following the Holocaust and the fall of Communism in Western and Eastern Europe. In addition, a pair of essays dedicated to six exhibitions that took place in Israel in 2008 to mark six decades of Israeli art raises significant issues on the relationship between art and gender, and art and politics. Die beiden Großstädte Tel Aviv und Berlin sind die gegenwärtigen Kulturmetropolen ihrer Länder. Die Besonderheit Berlins für Israelis ist ein "Einzelphänomen", die Stadt erscheint als "Portal zur jüdisch-europäischen Vergangenheit" (Fania Oz-Salzberger), denn hier sind die Zeichen der Geschichte, aus Kaiserreich und Weimarer Republik, der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung, von Ost und West auf der Oberfläche der Straßen und der Gebäude greifbar und nahe wie sonst nirgends, die Geschichte ist überall lebendig und entwickelt sich dennoch rasant weiter. Die gegenseitige Anziehungskraft besteht bereits seit der Gründung Tel Avivs im Jahr 1909 in Palästina, das zu dieser Zeit zum osmanischen Reich zählte. Damals schrieben jüdische Immigrant*innen, allen voran Lea Goldberg, die heute als wichtigste Literatin Israels gilt, von dem Leben in Berlin, ihrem Weg und Ankommen in Israel und den damit verbundenen Fragen. Heute blicken deutsche Gegenwartsautor*innen, wie etwa Katharina Hacker in Eine Art Liebe, fasziniert nach Tel Aviv. Währenddessen suchen israelische Autor*innen und Filmemacher*innen, wie z.B. Eytan Fox mit dem Film ללכת על המים ( Walk on Water), den kritischen Dialog mit Berlin, der einen neuen Blick auf die deutsch-jüdische und deutsch-israelische Geschichte und Gegenwart erlaubt. Das Buch beschäftigt sich mit einer großen Bandbreite literarischer und filmischer Werke aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, deutscher sowie israelischer Autor*innen und Filmemacher*innen, die sowohl die gesellschaftlichen und politischen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Metropolen als auch sehr persönliche und individuelle Aspekte des Lebens in Berlin und Tel Aviv und deren Zusammenhänge thematisieren. During the German “Kulturkampf” in the 1870s, the Frankfurt rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch enjoined all Jews of his community to exercise a right given by Prussian law: to withdraw from the united community which was dominated by Reform forces in order to belong only to a separate Orthodox community, founded according to Jewish law (Halakha). This work investigates the significance of these events for Orthodox Judaism in the 20th century. Focussing on the philosophy of Isaac Breuer, the grandson of Hirsch, Frankfurt attorney, novelist and co-founder of the Orthodox world movement Agudat Israel, this book describes the dilemmas of observant Jewry vis-à-vis the secularist Zionist movement. It shows the genesis modern Jewish Orthodoxy and helps to understand its activities, in a new “Kulturkampf”, in the state of Israel until today.

Although Kierkegaard's reception was initially more or less limited to Scandinavia, it has for a long time now been a highly international affair. As his writings were translated into different languages his reputation spread, and he became read more and more by people increasingly distant from his native Denmark. While in Scandinavia, the attack on the Church in the last years of his life became something of a cause célèbre, later, many different aspects of his work became the object of serious scholarly investigation well beyond the original northern borders. As his reputation grew, he was co-opted by a number of different philosophical and religious movements in different contexts throughout the world. The three tomes of this volume attempt to record the history of this reception according to national and linguistic categories. Tome III is the most geographically diverse, covering the Near East, Asia, Australia and the Americas. The section on the Near East features pioneering articles on the Kierkegaard reception in Israel, Turkey, Iran and the Arab world. The next section dubbed 'Asia and Australia' features articles on the long and rich traditions of Kierkegaard research in Japan and Korea along with the more recent ones in China and Australia. A final section is dedicated to Americas with articles on Canada, the United States, hispanophone South America, Mexico and Brazil.

This book traces the German-Hebrew contact zones in which Gershom Scholem, Werner Kraft and Ludwig Strauss lived and produced their creative work in early twentieth-century Germany and later in British Mandate Palestine after their voluntary or forced migration in the 1920s and 1930s. Set in shifting historical contexts and literary debates – the notion of the German vernacular nation, Hebraism and Jewish Revival in Weimar Germany, the crisis of language in modernist literature, and the fledgling multilingual communities in Jerusalem, the writings of Scholem, Kraft and Strauss emerge as unique forms of counterlanguage. The three chapters of the book are dedicated to Scholem’s Hebraist lamentation, Kraft’s Germanist steadfastness and Strauss’s polyglot dialogue, respectively. The examination of their correspondences, diaries, scholarship and literary oeuvres demonstrates how counteractive writing practices helped confront concrete and metaphorical crises of language to produce compelling alternatives to literary silence, amnesia or paralysis that were prompted by cultural marginality and dislocation.

Although Gershom Scholem presented his life in his autobiography as a one way movement from Berlin to Jerusalem, a closer look in mainly unpublished documents reveals a different picture. Since the moment of his arrival in Palestine in 1923 and until his death in 1982 he remained in close contact to the German speaking cultural and intellectual worlds. In the 1920ies and 1930ies he contributed to the Hebrew and Jewish cultural circles in Berlin, and even after the shock of the Holocaust he gradually returned to shorter and longer visits in Germany. In the postwar Federal Republic Scholem played a central role as a moral authority, who offered an alternative for young intellectuals to their corrupted father's generation. By doing so, the German-Israeli intellectual served as a generational link, bridging over the abyss created by the Holocaust. For Scholem himself this "return" was the outcome of a long process of disillusionment with his Zionist utopia.

First emerging at the beginning of the twentieth century, architectural reconstruction has increasingly become an instrument to visually revive a long bygone past. This book deals with the phenomenon of meticulous reconstruction in architecture. It argues that the politics of reconstruction go far beyond aesthetic considerations. Taking architecture as a major source of history and regional identity, the impact of large-scale reconstruction is deeply intertwined with political and social factors. Furthermore, memories and associations correlated with lost buildings of a bygone era are heavily influenced by their re-appearance, something which often contradicts historical events. Reconstruction has become an established way of building and dealing with the past, yet so far, there is no comprehensive scientific study on it. By bringing together eight case studies from Eastern Europe, France, Spain, China, Japan, Israel and Brazil, it provides valuable insights into this topic. The chapters analyse the political background of the reconstructions and identify the protagonists.
