This volume is the twelfth to date in a series of works in French or English presenting the epochs and movements of a Comparative History of Literatures in European Languages (Histoire Comparée des Littératures de Langues Européennes). The original intention of the editors was to publish a four-volume history of European literature from 1760-1820, and the first of these volumes, Des Lumières au Romantisme. Genres en Vers, appeared as long ago as 1982. The volumes Genres en Prose and Théâtre are still awaited. In their absence the present volume, Epoche im _berblick, attempts a more comprehensive and rigorous treatment of the period and its historiographical problems than was initially planned, providing the reader with an overview of sixty eventful years of European literary history years in which German Classicism coincided with the birth, initially in Germany and England, of Romanticism. And at the centre of this turbulent period of European intellectual and literary history stands the French Revolution.

Zudem wird die Entstehung und Weiterentwicklung verschiedener verfahrenstechnischer Grundoperationen beschrieben. Nach einer Vorstellung der Väter der Alchemie wird noch auf die alchemistischen Denkweisen in der heutigen Zeit eingegangen. Liest man die Begriffe Alchemie und Mittelalter, fühlt man sich häufig sehr weit in die Vergangenheit versetzt. Meistens entsteht dabei das Gefühl, diese wären so weit von der heutigen Zeit entfernt, dass sie keinerlei Berührungspunkte mit dem Heute besitzen. Die Denkweisen der Alchemie mischen naturwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse im heutigen Sinn mit religiösen, künstlerischen und emotionalen Elementen. Sie wird demnach oft als Teil der Naturphilosophie beschrieben und umfasst im Wesentlichen zwei Gesichtspunkte: Zum Einen einen naturwissenschaftlichen Aspekt. Dabei geht es um die Veredelung unedler Metalle, die Transmutation von einem Stoff in Silber und Gold mit Hilfe von Erkenntnissen und Experimenten aus dem Bereich der Metallurgie. Zum Anderen waren die Alchemisten auf der Suche nach Vervollkommnung ihrer Seele. Dieser spirituelle Teil ersuchte die Verlängerung des Lebens bis hin zur Unsterblichkeit.

Most professional historians see the relationship between pre-modern and modern alchemy as one of discontinuity and contrast. Mike A. Zuber challenges this dominant understanding and explores aspects of alchemy that have been neglected by recent work in the history of science. The predominant focus on the scientific aspect of alchemy, such as laboratory experiment, practical techniques, and material ingredients, argues Zuber, marginalizes the things that render alchemy so fascinating: its rich and vivid imagery, reliance on the medium of manuscript, and complicated relationship with religion. Spiritual Alchemy traces the early-modern antecedents of modern alchemy through generations of followers of Jacob Boehme, the cobbler and theosopher of Görlitz. As Boehme's disciples down the generations -- including the Silesian nobleman Abraham von Franckenberg and the London-based German immigrant Dionysius Andreas Freher, among others -- studied his writings, they drew on his spiritual alchemy, adapted it, and communicated it to their contemporaries. Spiritual alchemy combines traditional elements of alchemical literature with Christian mysticism. Defying the boundaries between science and religion, this combination was transmitted from Görlitz ultimately to England. In 1850, it inspired a young woman, later known as Mary Anne Atwood, to write her Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, usually seen as the first modern interpretation of alchemy. Drawing extensively on manuscript or otherwise obscure sources, Zuber documents continuity between pre-modern and modern forms of alchemy while exploring this hybrid phenomenon.
