In The Spatial Reformation, Michael J. Sauter offers a sweeping history of the way Europeans conceived of three-dimensional space, including the relationship between Earth and the heavens, between 1350 and 1850. He argues that this "spatial reformation" provoked a reorganization of knowledge in the West that was arguably as important as the religious Reformation. Notably, it had its own sacred text, which proved as central and was as ubiquitously embraced: Euclid's Elements. Aside from the Bible, no other work was so frequently reproduced in the early modern era. According to Sauter, its penetration and suffusion throughout European thought and experience call for a deliberate reconsideration not only of what constitutes the intellectual foundation of the early modern era but also of its temporal range. The Spatial Reformation contends that space is a human construct: that is, it is a concept that arises from the human imagination and gets expressed physically in texts and material objects. Sauter begins his examination by demonstrating how Euclidean geometry, when it was applied fully to the cosmos, estranged God from man, enabling the breakthrough to heliocentrism and, by extension, the discovery of the New World. Subsequent chapters provide detailed analyses of the construction of celestial and terrestrial globes, Albrecht Dürer's engraving Melencolia, the secularization of the natural history of the earth and man, and Hobbes's rejection of Euclid's sense of space and its effect on his political theory. Sauter's exploration culminates in the formation of a new anthropology in the eighteenth century that situated humanity in reference to spaces and places that human eyes had not actually seen. The Spatial Reformation illustrates how these disparate advancements can be viewed as resulting expressly from early modernity's embrace of Euclidean geometry.

Johann Christoph Gatterer (1727-1799) represents the history of the German Enlightenment as no other has ever done. He wrote ten compendia of universal history along with handbooks on geneaology, diplomatics, chronology, heraldry, statistics and several on geography. He founded two modern trade journals and the first institute for historical studies ever. In addition, he engaged in meteorological work and attempted to link diplomatics to botany. History "in its entirety" was the motto of his universal history and his institute. What was important to him was history as a precise science. The book describes Gatterer's construction of history in its parts and in context - a world of construction, not of narration, which is foreign to us and in whose architecture modern historiography has been included. Johann Christoph Gatterer (1727-1799) verkorpert die deutsche Aufklarungshistorie wie kein anderer. Zehn Universalgeschichtskompendien, begleitet von Handbuchern zur Genealogie, Diplomatik, Chronologie, Heraldik, Statistik und mehrere zur Geographie, verfasste er. Er grundete zwei moderne Fachzeitschriften und das erste geschichtswissenschaftliches Institut uberhaupt. Daruber hinaus betrieb er Meteorologie und suchte die Diplomatik im Gefolge der Botanik zu verwissenschaftlichen. Geschichte 'im ganzen Umfange' war das Motto seiner Universalhistorie und seines Instituts. Es ging ihm um Historie als prazisierte Wissenschaft. - Das Buch beschreibt die Geschichtskonstruktion Gatterers in ihren Teilen und im Zusammenhang - eine uns fremde Welt des Konstruierens, nicht des Erzahlens, in deren Architektur die moderne Geschichtsschreibung eingezogen ist.

Damit machte der Vater des in Zwickau geborenen Komponisten Robert Schumann auf ein Phänomen aufmerksam, das in jener Zeit allerorten in Europa zu beobachten war und die Geburtsstunde des modernen Tourismus kennzeichnet: Man reiste »mahlerisch«. Während der Aufklärung und Romantik wandelte sich das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Natur, die nun als »schön« wahrgenommen wurde. Zugleich gewann man einen neuen Zugang zur Geschichte. Burgen- und schlösserreiche Gegenden wie das Zwickauer Muldenland verbanden beide Aspekte auf ideale Weise und zogen zahlreiche Reisende an. Die Erfahrung von Naturschönheit und des in den ehrwürdigen Monumenten sichtbar gewordenen historischen Geistes wollte aber auch geteilt sein: Künstler und zeichnende Amateure verbreiteten über illustrierte Publikationen, Grafikmappen und Einzelblätter diese Ansichten und prägten das Bild der Region bis heute. Der Begleitband einer Ausstellung präsentiert – erstmals in diesem Umfang – etwa 250 zwischen Stein und Wolkenburg entstandene graphische Arbeiten. Einheimische und ausländische Künstler schufen das bemerkenswerte Konvolut über knapp zwei Jahrhunderte hinweg. Die meisten von ihnen kamen aus Sachsen, so Adrian Ludwig Richter, Julius Leypold und etliche Namenlose, doch begegnen wir mit Giuseppe Carlo Zucchi, Anton Arrigoni und Adrian Zingg ebenso Malern, Zeichnern und Stechern aus Italien, Österreich und der Schweiz. Die Museen in Zwickau und Glauchau sowie private Leihgeber haben ihre Schatzkammern geöffnet. So gelingt es, ein historisch authentisches Bild von Burgen, Schlössern und Rittergütern im südlichen Einzugsgebiet der Zwickauer Mulde zu vermitteln, welches schließlich auch zur kulturellen Identität der jetzt hier Lebenden beiträgt.
