Wann wandelte sich der Professorentypus vom Universalgelehrten zum modernen Forscher? Dieser Leitfrage widmet sich die vorliegende Studie am Beispiel der Kieler Universität von ihrer Gründung im Jahr 1665 bis zum Jahr 1815. Auf der Grundlage von insgesamt 183 Professorenbiografien verbindet die Autorin sozialgeschichtliche Forschung mit Fragen der Universitätsgeschichte. Ausgehend von der Betrachtung der voruniversitären Bildung, des Studiums und den einzelnen akademischen Stationen analysiert sie erstmals, welchen Einfluss die regionale wie auch soziale Herkunft der Professoren auf den Verlauf der Karrierewege nahm. Die Gesamtdarstellung, die auch die verwandtschaftlichen Verflechtungen der Professoren untereinander und ihr gesellschaftliches Engagement innerhalb der Kieler Stadtgesellschaft in den Blick nimmt, eröffnet damit neue Perspektiven für künftige Forschungsarbeiten, die sich mit dem tiefgreifenden Wandel der Institution Universität im 18. Jahrhundert auseinandersetzen.
