Nach der verlorenen Schlacht um Stalingrad und trotz der Mobilisierung aller Ressourcen während des »totalen Krieges« war die Niederlage Deutschlands absehbar. Der bedingungslosen Kapitulation folgten die Besatzung durch die Alliierten und der moralische Bankrott. Zeitgleich und mit Unterstützung der sowjetischen Besatzungsmacht etablierten sich nach 1945 auch in Sachsen Strukturen einer neuen Herrschaft, die in immer stärkerem Maße dem sowjetischen Leitbild ähnelten. Bis 1948 hatten sich wichtige Weichenstellungen in der Politik, Wirtschaft oder im Elitentransfer vollzogen – zumeist legitimiert durch den Anspruch einer »antifaschistisch-demokratischen« Umwälzung. Dennoch steht das Jahr 1945 nicht für eine »Stunde Null«. Der radikale politische und gesellschaftliche Umbruch schloss neben Brüchen auch Kontinuitäten ein. Weite Teile der Bevölkerung erlebten die Jahre 1943 bis 1949 als eine Zeit der extremen Ausnahmesituation und revolutionären Umwälzung. Untersuchungen zu diesem Zeitraum gibt es bereits für das Gebiet der alten Bundesrepublik, für das der ehemaligen SBZ/DDR stehen sie noch aus. Dieser Sammelband beginnt damit, diese Forschungslücke zu schließen. Die 28 Beiträge beschäftigen sich mit der inneren Verfasstheit der Kriegsendgesellschaft in Sachsen, der Errichtung einer neuen Herrschaft unter der Ägide der sowjetischen Besatzungsmacht und mit dem Wandel der Gesellschaft über die Zäsur von 1945 hinweg.

Dabei öffnet sich zum einen ein Panorama, das die Vielfalt des Lebens und Überlebens in der späten sächsischen Kriegsgesellschaft in seiner ganzen Bandbreite widerspiegelt. Zum anderen wird aber vor allem sichtbar, dass viele Menschen bis in die letzten Kriegswochen hinein loyal zum NS-Regime standen, eng verbunden mit einem nicht vorstellbaren Durchhaltewillen und dem unerschütterlichen Glauben, selbst ausschließlich Opfer der katastrophalen Situation zu sein. 31 people from Saxony are taken into consideration, based on the far-reaching demands of the "total war", which the NSDAP leadership and the Saxon regional leadership placed on the population. They lived in the city and in the countryside, were of different ages and found themselves in different personal, professional and political contexts. Their reflections, convictions, feelings and actions are described and analysed against the background of the Holocaust and the social development processes. This opens up a panorama that reflects the diversity of life, or, in many cases, survival, in the late Saxon wartime society in its entirety.

Revenge of the Domestic examines gender relations in East Germany from 1945 to the 1970s, focusing especially on the relationship between ordinary women, the Communist Party, and the state created by the Communists, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The book weaves together personal stories from interviews, statistical material, and evidence from archival research in Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, Merseburg, and Chemnitz to reconstruct the complex interplay between state policy toward women and the family on the one hand, and women's reactions to policy on the other. Donna Harsch demonstrates that women resisted state decisions as citizens, wageworkers, mothers, wives, and consumers, and that in every guise they maneuvered to overcome official neglect of the family. As state dependence on female employment increased, the book shows, the Communists began to respond to the insistence of women that the state pay attention to the family. In fits and starts, the party state begrudgingly retooled policy in a more consumerist and family-oriented direction. This "domestication" was partial, ambivalent, and barely acknowledged from above. It also had ambiguous, arguably regressive, effects on the private gender arrangements and attitudes of East Germans. Nonetheless, the economic and social consequences of this domestication were cumulatively powerful and, the book argues, gradually undermined the foundations of the GDR.
