Excerpt from Vorlesungen Uber Thermodynamik Die erste Anregung zur Abfassung des vorliegenden Buches empfing ich durch mehrfach an mich ergangene Aufforderungen, meine in das Gebiet der Thermodynamik fallenden Abhandlungen gesammelt herauszugeben bez. Zu einer zusammenfassenden Dar stellung zu verarbeiten. Wenn auch das erstere Verfahren als das einfachere naher gelegen hatte, zumal ich keine Veranlassung gefunden habe, an dem in meinen bisherigen Arbeiten befolgten Gedankengang etwas Wesentliches zu andern, so entschied ich mich doch fur eine neue Ueberarbeitung des ganzen Stoffes, einmal aus dem Grunde, weil mir daran lag, manche in dem knappen Styl einiger Abhandlungen etwas kurz gerathene allge meine Ueberlegungen und Beweise ausfuhrlicher und verstand licher zu gestalten, hauptsachlich aber deshalb, weil sich auf diese Weise Gelegenheit bot, mittelst einer entsprechenden Er weiterung des behandelten Themas das ganze Gebiet der Thermodynamik in eine einheitliche Darstellung zusammenzu fassen. Hiedurch ist dem Werke allerdings der Charakter einer Forschungsarbeit genommen und ihm mehr derjenige eines Lehr buches gegeben, bestimmt zur Einfuhrung in das Studium der Thermodynamik fur Jeden, der einen Anfangerkurs in Physik und Chemie durchgemacht hat und mit den Elementen der Differential und Integralrechnung vertraut ist. The present book has for its object the presentation of the lectures which I delivered as foreign lecturer at Columbia University in the spring of the present year under the title: ""The Present System of Theoretical Physics.""
