This three-volume set explores the multiple roles that parties and interest groups have played in American politics from the nation's beginnings to the present. This set serves as an essential resource for analyzing the emergence and impact of parties and interest groups in the American political system and for understanding the systematic and structural bases for interest group and party behavior. Volume One opens with an introduction by the editors that provides a general overview of the eras and identifies important themes and events, laying a foundation on which the subsequent essays and primary documents for each interest group or political party builds. Narrative essays focus on how specific parties or interest groups have shaped or reflect a particular set of events or general themes in each of the eras in American political history. Topical entries reflect key themes developed throughout the volumes. Entries range from important founding groups and parties to contemporary political action committees and policy advocacy groups. The set also includes primary source documents (e.g., letters, platform documents, court decisions, flyers, etc.) that reveal important dimensions of the corresponding group's political influence.

The Paradox Of Repression And Nonviolent Movements written by Lester R. Kurtz and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Political Science categories.

Political repression often paradoxically fuels popular movements rather than undermining resistance. When authorities respond to strategic nonviolent action with intimidation, coercion, and violence, they often undercut their own legitimacy, precipitating significant reforms or even governmental overthrow. Brutal repression of a movement is often a turning point in its history: Bloody Sunday in the March to Selma led to the passage of civil rights legislation by the US Congress, and the Amritsar Massacre in India showed the world the injustice of the British Empire’s use of force in maintaining control over its colonies. Activists in a wide range of movements have engaged in nonviolent strategies of repression management that can raise the likelihood that repression will cost those who use it. The Paradox of Repression and Nonviolent Movements brings scholars and activists together to address multiple dimensions and significant cases of this phenomenon, including the relational nature of nonviolent struggle and the cultural terrain on which it takes place, the psychological costs for agents of repression, and the importance of participation, creativity, and overcoming fear, whether in the streets or online.

Imagine a country where the right to vote is not guaranteed by the Constitution, where the candidate with the most votes loses, and where paperwork requirements and bureaucratic bungling disenfranchise millions. You're living in it. If the consequences weren't so serious, it would be funny. A concise handbook designed as a fact-filled companion to the forthcoming PBS documentary starring political satirist and commentator Mo Rocca, Electoral Dysfunction illuminates a broad array of issues, including: the Founding Fathers' decision to omit the right to vote from the Constitution—and the legal system's patchwork response to this omission; the battle over voter ID, voter impersonation, and voter fraud; the foul-ups that plague Election Day, from ballot design to contested recounts; the role of partisan officials in running elections; and the antidemocratic origins and impact of the Electoral College. The book concludes with a prescription for a healthy voting system crafted by leading voting-reform experts, whose agenda for change includes a call for universal voter registration and unform national standards. Published in the run-up to the 2012 election, Electoral Dysfunction is for readers across the political spectrum who want their vote to count.

The inaugural edition of The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry was the first of its kind, and subsequent editions have raised the bar, earning it a spot as a leading text in this fascinating subspecialty of psychiatry. This new, third edition is the product of a painstaking and exhaustive revision process that resulted in a significantly expanded and restructured work. This edition is a thorough review of the field yet is flexible enough to be useful to a diverse audience. Because the topics in and structure of this edition were informed by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology's Content Outline for the Certification Examination in Forensic Psychiatry, it can be used as a core text during forensic psychiatry fellowship training or as a review text to prepare for the certification or maintenance of certification exam. An excellent resource on legal issues in clinical practice, the book will also be an invaluable reference for general psychiatrists, who frequently encounter complicated forensic issues, such as informed consent, confidentiality, and the physician-patient relationship. The editors, two of the foremost experts in forensic psychiatry, faced the challenge of creating a text that accurately and fully reflects the latest advances in both the law and psychiatry, while enhancing learning. This comprehensive, yet accessible volume does just that. Every chapter has been revised, and 10 new chapters address topics of critical importance -- presented in a structure that facilitates study: The book highlights the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law's Landmark Cases in Forensic Psychiatry, listing the cases at the beginning of each chapter and highlighting them within the text. This helps readers master the key points in all topic areas, while fostering understanding of the impact of the evolution of legal principles in statutory and case law in forensic psychiatry. A new section on criminal justice includes chapters that address evaluations of competencies in the criminal justice system, assessment of criminal responsibility, and the role of psychiatry in death penalty cases. An entire section is devoted to forensic psychiatric issues involving children and adolescents, including general principles of evaluation of juveniles, evaluations of juveniles in civil law, and evaluations of juveniles in the criminal justice system New and revised chapters address the impact of technology on forensic psychiatry, including neuroimaging, the Internet, and telepsychiatry The book thoroughly addresses forensic assessments of all kinds, and introduces two new and critical chapters on risk assessment of suicide and violence Finally, an index of Landmark Cases and an extensive subject index provide the foundational knowledge and navigational tools to identify relevant cases and topics quickly and easily. The American Psychiatric Association Publishing Textbook of Forensic Psychiatry takes the reader from fundamental concepts to cutting-edge research. Practicing general and forensic psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, and those enrolled in forensic fellowship programs will come to depend on both its accessibility and its rigor.
