Excerpt from A Voyage Round the World, Between the Years 1816-1819 From this time the weather was variable, and very 8 so that we incurred great danger, and suffered much ship. The sea ran extremely high, and frequently covered the ship, so that, with this, and the frequent rain and thick fogs, it was impossible to dry our clothes for several days together. Happily, our vessel proved to be a most excellent one, and had less lee-way than any I ever knew. During this rough weather, as the currents continually set towards Terra del Fuego, I always tacked so as to keep as far from it as pos-v sible; yet, notwithstanding this precaution, the currents, and repeated bringing to, made us come twenty-eight leagues to leeward of Cape Noir, and twenty-four leagues of Cape Pi lares. On the 22d, we doubled the parallel of this promon tory, which is the western extremity of Strait Magellan, having thus gone round Terra del Fuego, on the eighteenth day since we made land at Cape Ines, and the sixteenth after quitting Strait Lemaire. At present, almost all vessels bound to the South Sea, pass to the east of the Falkland Islands and Staten Land, without approaching them. When, at this latitude, they meet with westerly winds, which are so common on these seas, they run to the south, as far as or thereabouts there they find vari ations, which permit them to go to the north-west. Without pretending to blame the practice adopted by most navigators. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In a word, I had as soon thought of setting out with him then and there as he of leaving me in charge of his patients during his proposed absence. Excerpt from Jacques Cartier and His Four Voyages to Canada: An Essay, With Historical, Explanatory and Philological Notes Mr. Stephens has added to his translations a large number of notes on the voyages, and these, having been, as a rule, carefully condensed, must have cost the writer considerable time and trouble. In his notes to the third voyage, while referring to the story of Roberval's niece, who was put ashore on the Isle of Demons, with her lover and old nurse, Mr. Stephens remarks Modern writers have used the incident - among them, I think, Frechette. He might have added that Marguerite, by George Martin, of Montreal, is an admirable poetic version of the same ghastly legend. The essay closes with a list of recent works, which, in addition to those of older writers, are of interest to students in con nection with Cartier and his voyages. Excerpt from A Journey Round My Room Our interest in the Voyage is height ened by our knowledge that it was actually written during De Maistre's forty-two days' arrest at Turin, referred to in the third chapter. He sent the manuscript, which he regarded as a mere playful effort of his imagination, for his brother's perusal. Joseph was pleased with the book; and Xavier, who had an almost filial affection for his brother, was soon afterwards agree ably surprised by receivmg, in place of his manuscript, the Voyage in print.
