Excerpt from The Voyage of the Rattletrap Perhaps we were pretty big boys - Jack and I. In fact, I'm afraid we were SO big that we haven't grown much Since. But Ollie was a boy, anyhow he couldn't have been more than a dozen years Old, and we looked' upon him as being a very small boy indeed; though when folks saw us starting Off, some Of them seemed to think that we were as boyish as he, because, they said, it was such a foolish thing to do; and in some way, I'm sure I don't know how, boys have got the reputation Of always doing foolish things. They're three Of a kind, ' said Grandpa Oldberry, as he watched us weigh anchor; their parents oughter be sent fer. Excerpt from The Land Across the Sea I Wonder how many of you from childhood, like the writer, have hoped to some day have the opportunity of visiting the lands across the sea. Come with me, in imagination, and we will board an ocean liner bound for Bremen, Germany, and cross the great Atlantic Ocean which separates the old from the new world. Such a hustling and hustling preparing for the long journey. The hours fairly fly on wings. The days are woefully short in which to accomplish the "thousand and one" things which come up at the last moment. Friends and neighbors drop in to say "bon voyage"; a few tears are shed and we are Anally on our way. Upon our arrival in the great metropolis of New York we take careful inventory of what will be needed on a sea voyage. It being our first crossing we are obliged to purchase a steamer trunk and steamer caps. We spend a very pleasant morning in the shops making our purchases. In the afternoon we go to Hoboken to have a peep at the great ship that is to bear us across the water. We are like children in our eager anticipation, for remember it is our first view of a real ocean liner. Taking the subway to Hoboken we soon arrive at the pier where our vessel lies at anchor. Such a "hurley-burley" of noise and confusion of teams, teamsters and endless trucks of luggage. You would think the entire population of Greater New York was moving. Threading our way through an everchanging throng we arrive at the gangway, where we ask if we may go on board. Consent is courteously given. A friend familiar with foreign travel has given us some valuable information derived from his own personal experience in fourteen crossings. Samarang, During the Years 1843-46, Vol. 2 of 2: Employed Surveying the Islands of the Eastern Archipelago; Accompanied by a Brief Vocabulary of the Principal Languages The breeze continuing to freshen we soon out-sailed these vessels, but one rather in the style of a Pratique, or health boat, motioning a wish to communicate, our pace was reduced and she came alongside; the officer would not, however, come on board. He presented a small box upon the end of a staff, in which I found a letter, worded in Dutch as well as French, requesting me to anchor near. Excerpt from The Romance of Yachting: Voyage the First This Volume of the Romance of Yachting will probably fall into the hands of most persons of intelligence going to sea, whether for pleasure or professmnally and it is likely, also, that it will form an addition to nautical libraries generally. It is proper, therefore, at the outset, for the author to speak of the design of the work. It has been framed mainly with a view to call the attention of Yachters, to the several phenomena ordinarily occurring at sea and on ship-board; but it is by no means so closely confined to nautical matters and technicalities, that landsmen may not read it with profit, and, 'it is hoped, with interest. The old and expe rienced seaman may, haply, also peruse it with amusement and Indulgence and the younger branch of the same profession with instruction. Excerpt from Voyage From France to Cochin-China: In the Ship Henry, Captain Rey, of Bordeaux, in the Years 1819 and 1820 On the 29th fune, letters from court informed me that I was at liberty to remain in the bay of Tourane, or to carry the ship into the river of Hue the capital and that, in either case, every assistance would be afforded to unload her. Ambitious that the Henry should be the first European vessel to enter the port of the capital, we weighed from Tourane at noon, and next mornin at 6 a.h. We dropped our anchor a mile north-east from t e fort, at the entrance of the river Hue. There we found another French ship, the Rose, which had arrived a few days lyf'ore, and had begun to discharge her cargo. Havin saluted the fort, the Fantou or military com mandant, and t e Thoughou or mandarin of justice, visited us ou-board, bringing a present of fresh fish and fruit. Our corresponding present was reserved for another occasion. The captain of the Rose came also on-board the Heur and I could discover that he was not over satisfied with t e pro gress of his affairs with the government: but he had a super cargo in the capital, who alone conducted all the business of the enterprise. My case was different; for I was sole master of my transactions; and being anxious to conduct myself so as not only to promote my own personal interest, but these also of m nation and countrymen in general, in future times, I resolve to commence no mercantile intercourse until I should consult the two French mandarins settled in the countr and in favour at court. From those gentlemen I learned that the difficulties arisen in the business of the Rose related to the value to be given by the government for the fire arms she had brought out. Without presuming to decide on which side the blame lay, I would just recommend to all who go to cochin-chinato provide themselves with a most accu rate and retentive memory, unless their transactions be con ducted by pen and aper.
