PREMESSA Io ho avuto interesse per la toponimia della Sardegna da sempre, cioè da più di 60 anni. Io perfino ricordo che il mio primo studio di linguistica era dedidato a un toponimo nuorese, Balubirde, del quale avevo dimostrato che era errato averlo tradotto nell'ital. Valverde, dato che il suo significato è assai differente (giugno 1945). In seguito ho pubblicato un'intera opera dedicata alla toponimia della Sardegna, o meglio alla sua macrotoponimia, opera intitolata “I nomi di paesi città regioni monti fiumi della Sardegna - significato e origine” (Cagliari 1997, ristampa 2004, E. Gasperini Editore). Di recente ho pubblicato un'opera intitolata “I toponimi della Sardegna – Significato e origine, 2 Sardegna centrale” (Sassari 2011, EDES - Editrice Democratica Sarda), la quale ha costituito una totale revisione della mia opera precedente ed insieme un suo grande ampliamento. Particolarmente in toponomastica, per il suo fondamentale carattere di aleatorietà – come dimostrerò meglio più avanti - un linguista ha l'obbligo ed insieme l'interesse a tentare nuove letture, nuove interpretazioni e nuove etimologie. Ebbene, a distanza di cinque anni da questa mia recente opera, ritorno sull'argomento e presento adesso una nuova opera di sintesi e di revisione generale, la presente intitolata “Luoghi e toponimi della Sardegna”. In maniera particolare tengo a precisare che nella presente opera – a parte i macrotoponimi - ho tralasciato quasi tutti i numerosi “toponimi trasparenti”, cioè quelli di cui il comune parlante di lingua sarda afferra immediatamente il significato, esempio Chercu «quercia», Funtana «fontana», Monte «monte», Ortu «orto», Riu «rivo», ecc., mentre ho registrato e studiato quasi solamente i “toponimi opachi”, quelli cioè di cui il comune parlante non afferra il significato effettivo. D'altra parte sono del tutto certo che mi siano sfuggiti altri toponimi che pure sarebbero stati degni di essere citati e studiati. Massimo Pittau
