The Eleventh Annual Conference on Virginia Woolf was the first to be held outside the United States. This voyage across the Atlantic was the stimulus for an exploration of themes of voyaging in Woolf’s works, from her interests in travel and cross-cultural encounters to her imaginative voyages between texts and genres . . . and the subsequent voyages her texts have made into the work of others. Published nine years after the conference, this selection of papers by international scholars fills a gap in the chronicles of the Woolf conference. For this reason, several papers feature an Afterword outlining developments in research since 2001, and the book also includes a “Bibliography of Publications Arising from the Conference,” facilitating access to research presented at Bangor but published elsewhere. Another special feature of the volume is the tribute to one of the keynote speakers, Julia Briggs, who died in 2007, in which Beth Rigel Daugherty communicates the gratitude of the scholarly community for Julia’s many contributions to Woolf studies. This welcome publication is a fitting record of our collective voyage as Woolf scholars.

Woolf's first novel is a haunting book, full of light and shadow. It takes Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose and their niece, Rachel, on a sea voyage from London to a resort on the South american coast. "It is a strange, tragic, inspired book whose scene is a South americanca not found on any map and reached by a boat which would not float on any sea, an americanca whose spiritual boundaries touch Xanadu and Atlantis" (E. M. Forster).

In The Voyage Out, one of Woolf's wittiest, socially satirical novels, Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship, and is launched on a course of self-discovery in a modern version of the mythic voyage. Lorna Sage's Introduction and Explanatory Notes offer guidance to thereader new to Woolf, and illuminate Woolf's presence, not identifiable in the heroine, but in the social satire, lyricism and patterning of consciousness in one woman's rite of passage.

The exhilarating follow-up to Pat Barker's The Women of Troy and The Silence of the Girls After ten blood-filled years, the war is over. Troy lies in smoking ruins as the victorious Greeks fill their ships with the spoils of battle. Alongside the treasures looted are the many Trojan women captured by the Greeks - among them the legendary prophetess Cassandra, and her watchful maid, Ritsa. Enslaved as concubine - war-wife - to King Agamemnon, Cassandra is plagued by visions of his death - and her own - while Ritsa is forced to bear witness to both Cassandra's frenzies and the horrors to come. Meanwhile, awaiting the fleet's return is Queen Clytemnestra, vengeful wife of Agamemnon. Heart-shattered by her husband's choice to sacrifice their eldest daughter to the gods in exchange for a fair wind to Troy, she has spent this long decade plotting retribution, in a palace haunted by child-ghosts. As one wife journeys toward the other, united by the vision of Agamemnon's death, one thing is certain: this long-awaited homecoming will change everyone's fates forever. Praise for Pat Barker: 'Barker delves unflinchingly into the enduring mysteries of human motivation' Sunday Telegraph 'She is not only a fine chronicler of war but of human nature' Independent 'Barker is a writer of crispness and clarity and an unflinching seeker of the germ of what it means to be human' Herald 'You go to her for plain truths, a driving storyline and a clear eye, steadily facing the history of our world' Guardian

A missionary’s daughter confronts her father’s secrets—and her own life—in this “deeply poetic” novel by the award-winning author of Mr. Wroe’s Virgins (The Guardian). When her missionary father suddenly dies in Nigeria, thirty-seven-year old school teacher Anne Harrington makes the journey from London to retrieve his body. She decides to take the return voyage by container ship, giving herself time to come to terms with his death. She had no way of knowing what would await her onboard: that she would get involved with two stowaways (clandestinely), and the ship’s mate (sexually), and the journey would end in murder. Nor, for that matter, that reading her father’s diaries would reveal an illegitimate sibling, whose fate her father was seeking when he died and whom Anne must now attempt to find in order to make peace with herself. In The Voyage Home, Jane Rogers explores the themes of immigration and colonialism in “a lusciously written tale, rich in emotional nuance” (Publishers Weekly).

Adeline Virginia Stephen Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author best known for her novels. She is considered one of the most important modernist 20th century authors and also a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. She suffered from bipolar disorder and, ultimately, committed suicide at the age of fifty-nine. "The Voyage Out" (1915) is Woolf's first novel. It's the story of Rachel Vinrace, a naïve young girl who travels to a South American resort for an extended stay. While there, she learns about the wider world, both abroad and at home. This book is in the Deseret Alphabet, a phonetic alphabet for writing English developed in the mid-19th century at the University of Deseret (now the University of Utah).
