In 1977 the Kenyan government banned all hunting, whether by sportsmen or Kenyan Africans, in response to the poaching crisis that was then spreading across the African continent. This brought an end to the era of the 'Great White Hunters' in this 'sportsman's paradise'. This book traces the history of hunting during Kenya's colonial era from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Three main themes emerge: first, is the importance of hunting to Kenyan farmers and herders; second is the attempt during European colonization of Kenya to recreate in Africa the practices and values of nineteenth-century European aristocratic hunts, which reinforced an image of African inferiority and subordination; third, is the role of the conservationists, who claimed sovereignty over nature and wildlife, completing the transformation of African hunters into criminal poachers. This comprehensive guide examines the personal histories, roles, and personalities that played into the traditional cultural art of carving. It also traces the influence of European patronage and the ensuing tourist trade upon this art form, as many Maori carvers began styling and catering their product to meet their clients’ aesthetic desires. Included is a discussion of the establishment of the government-sponsored Rotorua School of Maori Art in 1928, which appointed as the main tutor Eramiha Kapua, a Ngati Tarawhai carver, thus helping his own traditional tribal art to make the transition into a modern “national” art.

“When you hear thunder without rain–it is the buffalo approaching.” This line from a Yoruba hunting poem conveys the magnificent power of the African buffalo, also called “God’s cattle.” Hunter and writer Thomas McIntyre has pursued this special animal for the last forty years, and he now shares his expertise in Thunder Without Rain. McIntyre's topics are wide-ranging, from the various species of the African buffalo and their territories to the cultural importance of buffalo and its place among wild bovids. Other material he covers includes: African, European, and American methods for hunting buffalo Historical explorers as buffalo hunters Great buffalo hunters, including Theodore Roosevelt, Robert Ruark, Craig Boddington, and Robert Jones Ernest Hemingway’s writing on buffalo Correct cartridges for hunting African buffalo And finally, what makes buffalo so dangerous—and so sought after? After exploring all topics related to the African buffalo, including hunts of his own, McIntyre ends with the fate of modern buffalo hunting, now often guided and for a high price, and the sustainability of this practice. In Thunder Without Rain, McIntyre confronts his obsession with African buffalo and brings the reader along for a fascinating journey.
