Wilhelm Heinrich Wackenroder (1773-1798) è ritenuto l’iniziatore del Romanticismo tedesco. Condividendo con l’amico Ludwig Tieck (1773-1853) l’esperienza di brevi viaggi in Franconia nel 1793, Wackenroder rimane folgorato dalla grandezza della pittura rinascimentale, concependo nel tempo la stesura di alcuni testi redatti sul modello delle cronache degli artisti di Vasari o nella forma di carteggi tra giovani apprendisti pittori. Istituisce intanto un rapporto ideale tra l’arte di Dürer e quella di Raffaello. Tieck integra quei testi con contributi propri, perfettamente in sintonia con l’amico.Nascono così le Effusioni di cuore di un monaco amante dell’arte e le Fantasie sull’arte per gli amici dell’arte. Il carteggio tra Wackenroder e Tieck offre, inoltre, un quadro del dibattito estetico dell’epoca che interessa molti temi del tardo Illuminismo europeo, riferiti alla letteratura e alla drammaturgia: dalle teorie sui sentimenti al pensiero sul sublime.

‘Classico’ e ‘romantico’ sembrano a prima vista termini chiaramente distinti e diametralmente opposti tanto dal punto di vista delle caratteristiche formali e di contenuto che dal punto di vista della periodizzazione storica. In realtà le periodizzazioni variano talvolta anche considerevolmente da paese a paese e in riferimento alle varie arti. Al di là di alcuni elementi formali e di contenuto effettivamente divergenti, le due ‘correnti’ artistiche hanno inoltre molte proprietà in comune, cosicché non è difficile rinvenire elementi romantici in opere comunemente considerate classicistiche ovvero elementi classici in opere attribuite al Romanticismo. Proprio questi momenti di trasversalità, di contaminazione e di sovrapposizione di ‘classico’ e ‘romantico’ nelle discussioni estetiche, nelle opere letterarie o nelle composizioni musicali, ma anche nella produzione pittorica o nelle creazioni architettoniche di diversi paesi europei costituiscono il tema su cui riflettono i contributi raccolti in questo volume.

Acqua e musica nella cultura romantica rilegge la letteratura tedesca tra Sette e Ottocento tematizzandone la figura dell’acqua, seguendo le linee teorico-metodologiche tracciate da Gaston Bachelard nei suoi studi sull’immaginazione materiale, in particolare in L’eau et les rêves del 1942. Il lavoro indaga le affinità elettive tra sostanza liquida, parola poetica e musica nel periodo romantico. La rilettura mette in risalto il grande numero di metafore “liquido-acquatiche” nell’opera liederistica di Franz Schubert, con una particolare attenzione ai cicli Die Schöne Müllerin (1823) e Winterreise (1828). Lo studio viene condotto in prospettiva interdisciplinare che si estende alla lettura e all’ascolto dei Lieder e si situa tra l’analisi letteraria e musicale.
