Elective Affinities (German: Die Wahlverwandtschaften), also translated under the title Kindred by Choice, is the third novel by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, published in 1809. Situated around the city of Weimar, the book relates the story of Eduard and Charlotte, an aristocratic couple enjoying an idyllic but somewhat mundane life on a secluded estate; although it is the second marriage for both, their relationship deteriorates after they invite Eduard's friend Captain Otto and Charlotte's orphaned niece, Ottilie, to live with them in their mansion. The invitation to Ottilie and the Captain is described as an "experiment", as it indeed is. The house and its surrounding gardens are described as "a chemical retort in which the human elements are brought together for the reader to observe the resulting reaction."[1][2] As if in a chemical reaction, each of the spouses experiences a strong new attraction, which is reciprocated: Charlotte, who represents reason, to the sensible and energetic Captain Otto; the impulsive and passionate Eduard to the adolescent and charming Ottilie. The conflict between passion and reason leads to chaos and ultimately to a tragic end.

In an attempt to discover the one-idea with respect to which Goethe claimed he had worked while writing Die Wahlverwandtschaften, taking my cue from Goethe himself, I have united the investigational techniques of hermeneutics and complexity or chaos theory and brought them to bear on the structure of several of the mirroring events in the text. The overwhelming conclusion of this author is that, like those investigating chaos in nature, literary theorists must turn to comprehensive approaches if they wish to treat seriously the structure of texts as works which flow from nature: the nature of the human mind.

Die Zeitstrukturen in den "Wahlverwandtschaften" werden von der Sekundärliteratur zwar oft am Rande, selten jedoch ausführlich be-handelt. Das offensichtlich gestörte Verhältnis der Protagonisten zur Zeit wird in dieser Arbeit zum Hauptthema gemacht. Die Personen des Romans vergessen die Zeit, verpassen den richtigen Augenblick, um etwas zu tun und kreieren ihren eigenen Zeitablauf. Dabei sind drei verschiedene Zeitstrukturen feststellbar: die sich in Wiederholungen der Protagonisten äußernde zyklische Zeit, der häufig auftretende Zeitstillstand und das Vergessen der Zeit. Alle drei Zeitformen sind Ausdruck einer Flucht aus dem linearen Zeitablauf. Die Zeit im Zyklus äußert sich in zahlreichen Wiederholungsstrukturen und knüpft an idyllische Muster an. Der Zeitstillstand wird anhand der tableaux vivants und den zahlreichen Passagen im historischen Präsens nachgewiesen. Der Kampf der Protagonisten gegen die lineare Zeit gipfelt im Nachleben mythischer Vorbilder und dem damit verbundenen Vergessen der linearen Zeit zugunsten einer längst vergangenen. Der nachgelebte Mythos ist nicht willkürlich gewählt: er stellt den Kampf der zweiten Göttergeneration gegen den Gott der Zeit, Chronos, dar. Die Protagonisten ähneln sowohl in ihrem Handeln als auch in den Attributen ihren antiken Vorfahren, die sich gegen den Zeitgott auflehnen. Der Wechsel dieser drei Zeitstrukturen folgt einem symmetrischen Muster und deckt weitere Geheimnis-se des bereits oft interpretierten Romans auf. Goethes Annahme, dass die Beschäftigung mit den "Wahlverwandtschaften" "den Leser zu wiederholter Betrachtung auffordern wird" (Goethe in einem Brief an Cotta) erfährt einmal mehr ihre Bestätigung.

There is a prehistory of the adultery novel, which became a pan-European literary paradigm in the second half of the 19th century. In the wake of the French Revolution, secular marriage legislation emerges, producing a metaphorical surplus that is still effective today. Using legal history and canonical literary texts from Rousseau to Goethe and Manzoni to Hugo and Flaubert, this book traces how marriage around 1800 became a figure of reflection for the modern nation-state. In the process, original contributions to the philology of the individual texts emerge. At the same time, law and literature are made fruitful for a historical semantics of society and community. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition “Ehe als Nationalfiktion” by Dagmar Stöferle, published by J.B. Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The first book-length examination in English of the critical reception of Goethe's daring novel The Elective Affinities. From the time of its publication to today, Goethe's famous novel The Elective Affinities (Die Wahlverwandtschaften, 1809), has aroused a storm of critical confusion. Critics in every age have vehemently disagreed about its content (whether it defends the institution of marriage, radically supports its dissolution, or even whether it is about marriage at all), its style (whether it is romantic, realistic, modern, or postmodern) and its tone (whether it is tragic, anti-romantic, or ironic). The present study begins by focusing upon the reaction of Goethe's contemporaries, and then discusses Goethe's own efforts -- in light of the initial negative critical reaction -- toshape the novel's reception. It continues by viewing the novel through the lens of 19th-century Hegelianism, positivism, and biographical studies, and by exploring the relationship between the novel's 19th-century reception and the growth of psychoanalytic theory and German nationalism. Moving on to the 20th century, the book considers the re-evaluation of Goethe's scientific works, the impact of World War II on the novel's interpreters, and the growing influence of literary theory. Here particular emphasis is placed upon Walter Benjamin's seminal essay on the novel and upon the criticism that the essay has inspired. Astrida Orle Tantillo is assistant professor of German at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
