Dabei wird insbesondere der Begriff des Wahnsinn im 21. Jahrhundert beleuchtet. In seinem Buch "Wahnsinn und Gesellschaft. Eine Geschichte des Wahns im Zeitalter der Vernunft" zeichnet Foucault die Entstehung des heutigen Begriffs des Wahnsinn und der psychischen Krankheit nach. Während der Wahn bis in die Renaissance noch gesellschaftlich akzeptiert wurde, kommt es mit der Aufklärung zu einem Bruch. Während sich das Thema Wahnsinn langsam als Gegenentität der Vernunft abspaltet und einen eigenen Diskurs formt, beginnt gleichzeitig dessen Nachfrage der Erfassung und Messung. Zunächst wurden sämtliche Randgruppen in Hospitäler gesperrt, die noch keine medizinische Funktion hatten. Mit dem Aufkommen des Humanismus beginnt man diese Praktiken infrage zu stellen und fordert Reformen. Als Phillipe Pinel die Gefangenen von ihren Ketten befreit, müssen die gefährlichen Individuen zurückbleiben und konstituieren sich nach Foucault historisch das erste Mal als eine homogene Gruppe. In der Psychologiegeschichte wird diese „Befreiung“ gemeinhin als fortschrittlicher Akt im Geiste des Humanismus gesehen.

Yet, in spite of conceptual and other challenges that this notion raises, including a variety of interpretations, there is scarcely any systematic philosophical discussion of it. This book is unique in addressing philosophical issues - including conceptual challenges and opportunities - raised by the notion of recovery of people with mental illness. Such recovery - particularly in relation to serious mental illness such as schizophrenia - is often not about cure and can mean different things to different people. For example, it can mean symptom alleviation, ability to work, or the striving toward mental well-being (with or without symptoms). The book addresses these different meanings and their philosophical grounds, bringing to the fore perspectives of people with mental illness and their families as well as perspectives of philosophers, mental health care providers and researchers, among others. This volume and its companion, to be published as Volume 9 in the Annals series, had their origin in a visit by the first editor to our Center in 1983, a year prior to our initiating publication of the Annals. Some three years later, Hans Rappard formally proposed to edit, together with the historian of psychology in the Netherlands, Pieter van Strien, an Annals volume devoted to history and theory. Rappard emphasized, however, that it was to be "not just a volume on the relation between history of psychology and theoretical psychology, but rather a volume on the relevance of history to theory, or psychology in general. In other words, how and what could 'doing history' contribute to (theoretical) problems that face contemporary psychology. " Another four years passed before commitments from the twenty-seven contributors were received. The plan was to publish a single volume devoted to history and theory, however, the length of six major papers, eighteen commentaries, and replies to commentaries, necessitated a decision to publish the manuscript in two volumes. It was not an easy decision especially as the contributors and editors had achieved an integrity of theme and content that is unusual for edited volumes. Moreover, in view of the manuscript's long past, we felt little inclination to extend its history.
