Kunst wird gesehen, gehört, geschmeckt, gerochen und gespürt. Sie wird im Zusammenspiel mit den Sinnen empfunden, erfahren und erlebt. Wie Kunst von wem wahrgenommen wird, ist – so die soziologische These – stets eingebettet in praktisches, inkorporiertes und theoretisches Wissen, das durch kognitive, sinnliche, leibliche und ästhetische Begegnungen mit Kunst zugleich irritiert, nach seinen Grenzen und – noch grundsätzlicher – nach den Grenzen bestehender Gewissheiten befragt werden kann. Wahrnehmen von, durch und mit Kunst wird so auch als soziale Praxis relevant. Mit diesemZugang gehen Fragen danach einher, wie das Sehen, Hören, Schmecken, Riechen, Fühlen, dessen Eindrücken wir uns kaum entziehen können, sozialen Prägungen unterworfen und durch Machtverhältnisse geformt ist, wie aber auch durch das Soziale Interaktionen ermöglicht und Praktiken organisiert werden. Im vorliegenden Band kommen eine Bandbreite an soziologischen, philosophischen, geistes- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen zu Wort, die sich explizit den sozialen Aspekten des Wahrnehmens von Kunst in facettenreichen Dimensionen und Aspekten widmen. Der Band eruiert so, wie das Zusammenspiel von Künsten und Sinnen als soziale Praxis aus ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und Schwerpunktsetzungen in den Blick geraten kann: Er fragt, wie sich das Wahrnehmen von Materialien und Dingen, Oberflächen und Räumen, Tönen und Atmosphären durch verschiedene Akteure empirisch wie theoretisch als soziale Praxis in den Blick nehmen lässt.

Thomas Nölle stellt die Psychotherapie in diesem Band in einen größeren Zusammenhang und definiert sie als eine soziale Praxis mit maßgeblich heilkundlichem Charakter. Nowadays, psychotherapy is usually understood as a part of medicine. In the past, however, mental health care was not interpreted in terms of medical treatment alone. Philosophers and priests, as well as all those who assumed responsibility in their respective communities, also "cared" for the "salvation of the soul" of those entrusted to their care. Despite all the new treatment possibilities and concepts that enormously enrich today's psychotherapy, this limited understanding also leads to an impoverishment, not only in theory but also in practice. Thomas Nölle attempts to place psychotherapy in a larger context than just the medical model, expanding its understanding against its socio-cultural history and current background. According to him, it is best understood as a social practice.

The focus on concepts of power and domination in societal structures has characterized sociology since its beginnings. Max Weber’s definition of power as “imposing one’s will on others” is still relevant to explaining processes in the arts, whether their production, imagination, communication, distribution, critique or consumption. Domination in the arts is exercised by internal and external rulers through institutionalized social structures and through beliefs about their legitimacy, achieved by defining and shaping art tastes. The complexity of how the arts relate to power arises from the complexity of the policies of artistic production, distribution and consumption—policies which serve to facilitate or hinder an aesthetic object from reaching its intended public. Curators, critics and collectors employ a variety of forms of cultural and artistic communication to mirror and shape the dominant social, economic and political conditions. Arts and Power: Policies in and by the Arts brings together diverse voices who position the societal functions of art in fields of domination and power, of structure and agency—whether they are used to impose hegemonic, totalitarian or unjust goals or to pursue social purposes fostering equal rights and grassroots democracy. This book is about the everyday life of people with visual impairment or blindness. Using video ethnographic methods and ethnomethodological conversation analysis, it unpacks the practical accomplishments of everyday activities such as navigating in public space, identifying objects and obstacles, being included in workplace activities, interacting with guide dogs, or interacting in museums or classes in school. Navigation, social inclusion, and the world of touch constitute key phenomena that are affected by visual impairment and which we study in this book. Whereas sighted people use their sight for navigating, for figuring out the location of co-participants and the embodied cues they produce, and for achieving understanding of objects in the world, visually impaired people on the contrary cannot rely on vision for navigating, for interpreting embodied cues, or for identifying or recognizing objects. Other sensory resources and other practices are employed to accomplish these basic human actions. The chapters in this book present examples and findings relevant to these issues and draw out the general theoretical implications of these findings. Whereas existing research often studies visual impairment from a medical, cognitive, and psychological perspective, this book provides insights into how visually impaired people accomplish ordinary activities in orderly, organized ways by a detailed study of their actions. While most books describe cognitive and biological issues, many of them using experimental methods, this book provides empirical findings about the actual daily lives as it naturally unfolds based on video recordings. The book contributes insights into the practices of living with visual impairment as well as perspectives for rethinking some of the most basic aspects of human sociality, including perception, interaction, multisensoriality and ocularcentrism (the view that the world is de facto designed by and for sighted persons). As such, the book provides novel findings in the field of ethnomethodological conversation analysis. Renewing the social model of disability, this book will appeal to scholars of sociology with interests in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, the emergence of practical skills, and understandings of disability in terms of relations between the individual and the social environment. Was ist Spiritualität? Üblicherweise wird sie als etwas höchst Innerliches und Subjektives verstanden, das zugleich auf etwas Überindividuelles (einen Transzendenzbereich) verweist und sich insofern der Beschreib- und Beobachtbarkeit entzieht. Dagegen schlägt dieses Buch eine alternative Betrachtungsweise vor: Spiritualität wird als eine soziale Praxis begriffen und gefragt, wie Spiritualität gemacht wird. Am Beispiel des Yoga wird untersucht, wie Spiritualität für Praktizierende im gemeinsamen beobachtbaren Tun – z. B. in Gesprächen, (Alltags-)Ritualen, Yogaphilosophievorträgen und beim Erlernen der körperlichen Yogaübungen – praktisch erklärbar und verstehbar wird. In dieser Ethnografie folgt der Autor den Handelnden buchstäblich auf die Yogamatte, nimmt an einer Yogalehrerausbildung im Aschram und an einem Yogafestival in Berlin teil und dechiffriert die ganz eigene Welt und Wirklichkeit des Yoga. Die Analyse folgt dem, was zwischen Menschen geschieht: auf andere bezogene, von anderen erlernte, wechselseitig beobachtete, zum Teil besprochene und gemeinsam vollzogene Tätigkeiten. Das Ziel ist eine Beschreibung der sozialen Praxis der spirituellen Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit, die konventionelle Trennungen – von Körper und Geist, Psychischem und Sozialem, Theorie und Praxis – neu verortet und zeigt, wie die soziale Mitwelt an grundlegenden (Selbst-)Wahrnehmungen, dem körperlichen In-der-Welt-Sein sowie innerlichen Erfahrungen beteiligt ist. Das Buch leistet einen empirischen und theoretischen Beitrag zur Körper-, Religions- und Interaktionssoziologie, zur qualitativen Methodenentwicklung und Ethnomethodologie sowie zu grundlegenden Fragen der Sozialtheorie.
