This is a memoir of a diehard--a diehard fan who drove himself and his family half crazy to get to Cubs games that were 700 miles away from their home. Along the way Sullivan recounts the history of Cubs baseball, including events from the 1908 season, as well as reminiscences from other fans and stories of his own experience following a team that has gone more than a century without attaining that final win that would make them world champions.

It has been a long time. Joe Tinker, Johnny Evers, and Frank Chance--that "trio of bear cubs" immortalized in poem and enshrined as a unit in Cooperstown--formed the core of a ball club that brought Chicago baseball fans backtoback World Series championships 100 years ago. And fans are still waiting for victory number three. Chicago Cubs: Tinker to Evers to Chance brings the reader back to the notsohalcyon days of spitball pitchers, insidethepark home runs, and an era when raucous fans lined the foul lines, often a little too close for comfort for the visiting ballplayers. Beginning in 1898 with the acquisition of a green Frank Chance and following the team's exploits through the 1916 season, the last for Joe Tinker in a Cubs uniform, this is the story of Wrigleyville's favorite tenants, before there was a Wrigleyville.

One Of Us written by Barrie K Gilbert and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-20 with Nature categories.

Barrie Gilbert’s fascination with grizzly bears almost got him killed in Yellowstone National Park. He recovered, returned to fieldwork and devoted the next several decades to understanding and protecting these often-maligned giants. He has spent thousands of hours among wild grizzles in Yosemite and Yellowstone national parks, Alberta, coastal British Columbia, and along Brooks River in Alaska’s Katmai National Park, where hundreds of people gather to watch dozens of grizzlies feast on salmon. His research has centered on how bears respond to people and each other, with a focus on how to keep humans and bears safe. Drawn from his decades of experience, One of Us: A Biologist’s Walk Among Bears explodes myths that depict grizzlies as bloodthirsty beasts that “kill for pleasure” and reveals the intelligent, adaptable side of these astonishingly social animals. He also explains their pivotal role in maintaining and protecting their fragile ecosystems. Accordingly, Gilbert pulls no punches when outlining threats to bear conservation. Most importantly, this book extolls a new way of appreciating grizzly bears, the same way we regard wolves, whales, chimpanzees, and gorillas.

Jack Coombs rose to deadball-era stardom as the ace of Connie Mack's Athletics, winners of back-to-back world championships in 1910 and 1911. One of the few players of his day to have graduated from college, Coombs debuted for the Athletics in 1906, fresh from Colby College. Within a few years, he was one of the best and best-known pitchers in baseball, leading the majors in victories in consecutive seasons. But then in 1913 Coombs contracted typhoid fever, a disease that cost the right-hander two seasons at the peak of his career. And while he battled his way back, pitching well in his comeback season of 1915 and then leading the Brooklyn Robins to the World Series in 1916, he was never again the dominant pitcher he had been. Coombs went on to a long career as a coach for Duke University, and wrote one of the most highly regarded instructional books on baseball ever published.

MARIO CESARE, after decades as warden of Olifants River Game Reserve, has his feet firmly planted in this magnificent slice of Big Five country to the west of the Kruger Park. Cesare recounts some of the hair-raising, heartbreaking and heartwarming moments: a buffalo calf reunited with its pining mother, injured lions given second chances and rhinos lost, one by one, to poaching. Heart of a Game Ranger is a story of extremes, where spectacular days that end in exhausted satisfaction and achievement are balanced by those that leave behind only despair and frustration. Seen through his eyes and spoken from the heart, Cesare tells a deeply personal story – not only of a life lived wild, but of the joy of Africa's incredible natural world.

An irresistible comedy of manners about three generations of a Chicago restaurant family and the deep-fried, beer-battered, cream cheese-frosted love that feeds them all—from the best-selling author of Girls in White Dresses “Laugh-out-loud funny, and deeply resonant to our times. I was so happy to be in the Sullivan family’s Chicago bar, caught in the swirl of three generations of grudges, love affairs and fraught personal decisions.” —Ann Napolitano, best-selling author of Dear Edward Here are the three things the Sullivan family knows to be true: the Chicago Cubs will always be the underdogs; historical progress is inevitable; and their grandfather, Bud, founder of JP Sullivan’s, will always make the best burgers in Oak Park. But when, over the course of three strange months, the Cubs win the World Series, Trump is elected president, and Bud drops dead, suddenly everyone in the family finds themselves doubting all they hold dear. Take Gretchen for example, lead singer for a ’90s cover band who has been flirting with fame for a decade but is beginning to wonder if she’s too old to be chasing a childish dream. Or Jane, Gretchen’s older sister, who is starting to suspect that her fitness-obsessed husband who hides the screen of his phone isn’t always “working late.” And then there’s Teddy, their steadfast, unfailingly good cousin, nursing heartbreak and confusion because the guy who dumped him keeps showing up for lunch at JP Sullivan’s where Teddy is the manager. How can any of them be expected to make the right decisions when the world feels sideways—and the bartender at JP Sullivan’s makes such strong cocktails? Outrageously funny and wickedly astute, Marrying the Ketchups is a delicious confection by one of our most beloved authors. .

Two white lion cubs have been born and are already on a death list. Because of rife superstition, the local people believe that albino animals are portends of death. The children round up a group of adults and set off on an adventure to save the lives of the cubs. Tracey, Jonathan, and the Khoi San brothers work together with an indigenous Australian man and members of the Masawani Game Park team to counter the dire prophecy made by the late Sangoma Pafinna. It is up to all of them to save the tiny lion cubs.
