An “exhilirating” novel of domestic terrorism in the gritty streets of 1980s New York from the National Book Award–finalist and author of Straight Cut (The New Yorker). As a staff photographer at Bellevue hospital in Manhattan, Clarence Dmitri Larkin is exposed to the fraying underbelly of New York City. Drawn in by the stories of the sick, the lost, and the insane, Larkin’s own dark impulses lead him through the streets of Brooklyn’s shadowy warehouse district. Increasingly isolated from the world around him, Larkin falls in with a disturbed cell of outcasts. Their ringleader, empowered by confused visions of grandeur and revolution, launches an outlandish scheme to plant an atomic bomb in the catacombs under Times Square. Narrated with unsettling plausibility, Bell’s debut novel demonstrates the remarkable literary skill celebrated in his later novels, such as Soldier’s Joy and The Year of Silence. With “real brilliance . . . full of fire . . . Bell provides promise: promise of his own talent and promise that young American writers are not all retreating from ‘big’ subjects” (The New York Times). “Every sentence [Bell] writes is a joy. His power is exhilarating.” —The New Yorker

“A marvelous book, at once comprehensive and highly readable, a fascinating analysis of doomsday cults and apocalyptic anxiety.” —Michael Owen Jones, University of California, Los Angeles From religious tomes to current folk prophesies, recorded history reveals a plethora of narratives predicting or showcasing the end of the world. The incident at Waco, the subway bombing by the Japanese cult Aum Supreme Truth, and the tragedy at Jonestown are just a few examples of such apocalyptic scenarios. And these are not isolated incidents; millions of Americans today believe the end of the world is inevitable, either by a divinely ordained plan, nuclear catastrophe, alien invasion, or gradual environmental decay. Examining the doomsday scenarios and apocalyptic predictions of visionaries, televangelists, survivalists, and various other end-times enthusiasts, as well as popular culture, film, music, fashion, and humor, Daniel Wojcik sheds new light on America's fascination with worldly destruction and transformation. He explores the origins of contemporary apocalyptic beliefs and compares religious and secular apocalyptic speculation, showing us the routes our belief systems have traveled over the centuries to arrive at the dawn of a new millennium. Timely, yet of lasting importance, The End of the World as We Know It is a comprehensive cultural and historical portrait of an age-old phenomenon and a fascinating guide to contemporary apocalyptic fever. “Fascinating [and] intelligent . . . should be required reading.” —Psychotronic “Makes accessible to both scholars and general readers the amazing panorama of millenarian scenarios abounding in America.” —Robert S. Ellwood, University of Southern California “The best survey and analysis of the meaning and place of apocalypticism and millennialism in American culture.” —Religion and Literature

The use of Christian apocalyptic myths has changed significantly over the centuries. Initially used by genuinely disenfranchised groups, they are used today as a response to more egalitarian treatment of minorities in American society. The apocalyptic framework allows the patriarchy to frame itself as the victim who must restore America to a past where white male power went uncontested. This kind of white anxiety over increasing minority rights frequently manifests itself in contemporary apocalyptic media, which often depicts a white male hero facing a wide array of threatening "Others." Taking a unique look at the parallels between apocalypticism and American frontier mythology, as well as conspiracy theories and the post-apocalyptic obsession with repurposed objects, Whiteness at the End of the World analyzes many well-known films from the past fifty years, from Planet of the Apes to I Am Mother. It offers unique, clearly presented insights into recurring patterns that appear in an extraordinarily ubiquitous genre that has only increased in popularity, and whose themes of racial anxiety are increasingly pertinent in our increasingly contentious political climate.

We may never know when the actual end of the world is upon us, but that doesn't mean we can't freak out about the end times. Spanning centuries, cultures, and continents, the more than 80 doomsday scenarios featured in A History of the End of the World examine humanity's tendency to envision the end of itself, and everything else in the universe. With offerings pulled from religion and mythology, science, literature, and conspiracy theories, the range of stories is fascinating, illuminating, and frequently strange. But whether they issue from an ancient text or a pulp sci-fi novel, each of these apocalyptic visions will resonate, and remain at the backs of our minds, making us a little bit excited, and a little bit anxious, keeping us awake as we lay in bed, wondering what we're moving toward. "A philosopher, historian of religions, and anthropologist, Ernesto De Martino is often glossed as "ahead of his time." In his work, a reader sees the roots of psychological and medical anthropology; discussions of reflexivity and the role of the ethnographer; considerations of colonialism and migration and the trauma they might engender; and an anticipation of the "existential turn" in anthropology. A reader would also find an attentiveness to hope and possibility, despite the gloomy title of his posthumously published book, La fine del mondo (The End of the World). Perhaps the end of the world is an overstatement. But in a rapidly globalizing world, one in which the entire earth becomes our shared "cultural homeland," despite our different values and local histories, "the end of the world" might simply mean the end of "a world," our particular world, and the dawning of something new-"the world of tomorrow." De Martino seeks, in part, to make the idea of the end of a world less horrifying, while at the same time attending to the individual loss-of-self that one might feel in contemplating an apocalypse, especially as modernization has divorced us from the rituals and folklore that might make such an eventuality less terrifying. De Martino writes: "Two opposed terrors dominate our age: the terror of losing the world, and the terror of being lost in the world... The end of the world, the loss of presence." Interweaving the cultural and individual levels of apocalypse, treating subjects both classic and contemporary and both European and "non-Western," ranging across ethnography and philosophy, De Martino probes how we relate to our world and how we might be better subjects and thinkers within it"--

The End-of-the-World Delusion is a well-written, thoroughly researched, and very readable book. Deerings lively narrative makes complex and complicated topics accessible to the average reader. He certainly pulled me into his book despite my cynical view of the topic. Deering offers the reader riveting histories of end-of-the world beliefs and covers an extraordinary array of ground in this well-researched book, discussing everything from the Mayan end-of-times predictions, Christian rapture beliefs, pandemics, economic doomsday scenarios, and other apocalyptic predictions. Robert Watson, PhD, author/editor of thirty-four books, including The Presidents Wives and Americas War on Terror People from many different corners of civilization seem to be saying the same thing: the end is near. In The End-of-the-World Delusion, author Justin Deering explores such scenarios, discussing why they are not likely to occur or have any visible impact on this planet within our lifetime. Providing a thorough analysis, Deering chronicles the numerous instances of such predictions throughout history, examines frequent religious and cultural sources of these end-of-world claims, analyzes the sociological and psychological dynamics and dangers, and outlines other forms of end-times beliefs, ranging from religious to pop culture in nature. The End-of-the-World Delusion provides concrete information that helps evaluate these dubious assertions, relates how such beliefs have harmed individuals and society, and talks about why people are inclined to nurture such beliefs in the first place. Setting the record straight by detailing the history of failed doomsdays, Deering shows that nothing can be gained by worrying about the end of time, and that we must learn a lesson from the past, live in the present, and plan for the future.
