In her quest to live a vibrant spiritual life, Karen Wright Marsh had a revelation: she didn't need to find and follow the perfect plan; she needed people she could follow. In Wake Up to Wonder, Marsh introduces you to those people--faithful yet oh-so-human Christians from across centuries and cultures. Inspired by their example, she offers playful, simple practices that bring deeper meaning and purpose to everyday life. In the company of diverse spiritual companions, you'll journey through physical health, prayer, activism, Scripture reading, creativity, and beyond. Each chapter includes hands-on invitations such as writing prompts, space for personal reflection, and "Try This," a collage of spiritual and personal experiments anyone can do. As you wake up to wonder, you'll discover what these twenty-two historical figures already knew: that a life of spiritual depth, amazement, and connection is within reach--today and every day. According to St. John of the Cross, “our awakening is an awakening of God and our rising is God’s rising. It is as though David were to say: Let us arise and be awakened twice, because we are doubly asleep and fallen. Since the soul was in a sleep from which it could never awaken itself, and only God could open its eyes and cause this awakening, it very appropriately calls this an awakening of God, saying: “You wake in my heart”. Awaken and enlighten us, my Lord, that we might know and love the blessings that you ever propose to us, and that we might understand that you have moved to bestow favors on us and have remembered us” (Flame IV.9). I have read many books that suggest ways to discover the goal of our life. All these could be classified as selfhelp books because they approach the subject from a self-centered viewpoint and suggest some possible remedies and prescribe some methods. Try to clarify our values and set some goals. Figure out what we are INTRODUCTION xiv good at. Aim high. Go for it! Be disciplined. Believe we can achieve our goals. Involve others. Never give up. Of course, these recommendations often lead to great success. But waking up to realities within and around us can be as powerful as disciplining or never giving up. You can usually succeed in reaching a goal if you put your mind to it. But being successful and fulfilling your life’s goals are not at all the same issue! You could reach all your personal goals, becoming a raving success by the world’s standards, and still miss the purposes for which God created you. You need more than self-help advice; you need to wake up to realities around you. This is what the great mystics insist. They just tell us that we need to open our eyes and be open to all that happens right there in your presence. This is what they call ‘watching’ or waking up. The great mystics like St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and others woke up to God experience at a moment in their life and as a consequence their life was totally transformed into a life of great joy and contentment. They lived in the presence of God as if were already in heaven. This is what I mean telling myself and others who read this book: WAKE UP.

In ministry as in life, we get knocked down. Sometimes, due to our folly or despair or fatigue or external opposition, we stumble and fall. How do we get back up--again and again and again? Resiliency, the ability to bounce back, is a gift of God. Leaders are able to get up and follow the crucified and risen Lord when they are drawn, when they are enchanted by the awesome mystery of the triune God. Discipleship has never been easy. The way, staying on the narrow path that leads to abundant life, is hard. Today, no less than the first disciples, followers of Christ face an array of challenges, not the least of which is disenchantment: "We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel" (Luke 24:21). Seen through an Enlightenment lens, disenchantment may be more acute and prevalent in our times, but it is not new. We walk our own Emmaus Road. And when we keep walking, when we follow the one who joins us on the Road, eyes are opened, hearts burn, the one standing before us is recognized, and we are sustained for the journey. This collection of theological essays on ministry is an invitation to "run and not be weary . . . to walk and not faint" (Isa 40:31) by walking in wonder with the wholly other God who is near.

Renewal for Men and Women In Their Thirties, Forties, Fifties and Beyond Are you among the millions of North Americans over age thirty-five burdened down by unfulfilled dreams, diminished expectations, an irrational fear of tomorrow and a stressful, uninspiring daily routine? Is your life at mid-stream far less than you had intended it to be? Our book, A Mid-Life Challenge-Wake Up , was written to restore joy, reestablish positive expectations and return a spirit of adventure to your life Almost by accident, the author awakened in the year 2000 to a highly positive realization: persons in their middle years need not abandon dreams of a fulfilling career, mutually beneficial personal relationships and a prosperous lifestyle precisely on their own terms. Indeed for most, middle age is an ideal time to reassess the present, creatively plan for the future and take control over life's direction. Unlike the author, readers need not endure thirty long years of "sleepwalking through life" or rely upon a once-in-a-lifetime chance inspiration. Based upon personal experience and observation of successful renewal "graduates", the author lays out a comprehensive step-by-step blueprint to reinvigorate life at mid-stream. This book will inspire any middle-aged woman or man earnestly committed to restoring positive emotions and reentering life's mainstream beginning this very day. The author Roy Richards is a motivational speaker and consultant and co-founder of the Middle Age Renewal Training Institute (MART.) His stated mission is to revitalize the life experience for dispirited men and women over age thirty-five. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota with a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago, the author spent seventeen years climbing the corporate ladder with four major U. S. corporations. For the past fifteen years, he has thrived as a small business owner and entrepreneur. The author and his wife Gloria reside in Clive, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines and are parents of two grown children, Kristen and Geoffrey. They share their home with an energetic English Springer Spaniel named Chips.
