In his classic essay on walking, Henry David Thoreau, the famous naturalist and philosopher, extols the virtues of immersing ourselves daily in nature. Thoreau treats the act of walking as a vehicle that transports us to the sacred space that is nature. The wildness of nature becomes a retreat from the noise of contemporary society and civilization-a place to rest our thoughts and regain balance between these two worlds. This J. Missouri edition contains nearly 40 new historical and biographical footnotes.

This Edition of Walking is the Original 1862 Edition and Is Annotated. Henry David Thoreau is very well known for his book, Walden, which was published in 1854. Thoreau was born as David Henry Thoreau in Concord, Massachusetts on July 12, 1817. His parents were John Thoreau, who was a pencil maker, and Cynthia Dunbar. He had three siblings: an older sister named Helen, an older brother named John Jr. and a younger sister named Sophia. Thoreau was originally named after his uncle David. After college, he changed his name to Henry David, although he didn't petition for a formal name change. His maternal grandfather, Asa Dunbar led the Butter Rebellion at Harvard College in 1766. Thoreau attended college at Harvard from 1833 until 1837. After he graduated in 1837, he worked at a Concord public school and quit only a few weeks after he started because he didn't want to take part in corporal punishment to the students. 1938, Thoreau and his brother John opened a school. At their school, the children's education included nature walks. In 1942, the school closed because Thoreau's brother John cut himself while shaving and contracted tetanus. John died shortly after, in Henry's arms.

Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Walking, or sometimes referred to as "The Wild", is a Henry David Thoreau lecture first given at the Concord Lyceum on April 23, 1851. It was written between 1851 and 1860, but parts of his earlier publications were extracted. Thoreau read the piece a total of ten times, more than any of his other lectures. "Walking" was first published as an essay in the Atlantic Monthly after his death in 1862. "Walking" is a momentous essay that analyzes the relationship between man and nature, trying to find a balance between society and our raw animal nature. I would not like to cultivate every man or every part of a man, just as I would not cultivate every acre of land: part will be the tillage, but most will be prairie and forest. I want to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and the wild.In contrast to a purely civil liberty and culture, to consider man as an inhabitant, or an integral part of Nature, rather than a member of society. I derive more from my subsistence from the swamps that surround my hometown than from the gardens cultivated in the village. According to Thoreau, and like Emerson, being in nature is a spiritual experience, which shapes who we are.

In Walking, Henry David Thoreau talks about the importance of nature to mankind, and how people cannot survive without nature, physically, mentally, and spiritually, yet we seem to be spending more and more time entrenched by society. For Thoreau walking is a self-reflective spiritual act that occurs only when you are away from society, that allows you to learn about who you are, and find other aspects of yourself that have been chipped away by society. This new edition of Thoreau's classic work includes annotations and a biographical essay.

Walking is an essentially human activity. From a basic means of transport and opportunity for leisure through to being a religious act, walking has served as a significant philosophical, literary and historical subject. Thoreau’s 1851 lecture on Walking or the Romantic walks of the Wordsworths at Grasmere in the early 19th Century, for example, helped create a philosophical foundation for the importance of the act of walking as an act of engagement with nature. Similarly, and sometimes inseparable from secular appreciation, pilgrimage trails provide opportunities for finding self and others in the travails of the walk. More recently, walking has been embraced as a means of encouraging greater health and well-being, community improvement and more sustainable means of travel. Yet despite the significance of the subject of walking there is as yet no integrated treatment of the subject in the social science literature. This handbook therefore brings together a number of the main themes on the study of walking from different disciplines and literatures into a single volume that can be accessed from across the social sciences. It is divided into five main sections: culture, society and historical context; social practices, perceptions and behaviours; hiking trails and pilgrimage routes; health, well-being and psychology; and method, planning and design. Each of these highlights current approaches and major themes in research on walking in a range of different environments. This handbook carves out a unique niche in the study of walking. The international and cross-disciplinary nature of the contributions of the book are expected to be of interest to numerous academic fields in the social and health sciences, as well as to urban and regional planners and those in charge of the management of outdoor recreation and tourism globally.

I wish to speak a word for Nature, for absolute freedom and wildness, as contrasted with a freedom and culture merely civil--to regard man as an inhabitant, or a part and parcel of Nature, rather than a member of society. I wish to make an extreme statement, if so I may make an emphatic one, for there are enough champions of civilization: the minister and the school committee and every one of you will take care of that.
