Excerpt from Walks and Talks The true test of really great things is their simplicity. They are so easily understood by everybody. In that wonderful art gallery at the World's Fair, it was the simple pictures that drew the crowds, the ones that all understood, and crowded upon each other to look at. Breaking Family Ties, Preparing for the Wedding, The Alarm, The Reply, and a thousand more that could be named - these are the great works of art, and they are simple and as easily understood as they are incomparable as artistic productions. Excerpt from Walks and Talks About London London has so many aspects, that it has been well described as a subject always new. That hearty lover of our metropolis, Dr. Johnson, sitting in Bolt-court, said: "the happiness of London is not to be conceived but by those who have been in it. I will venture to say, there is more learning and science within the circumference of ten miles from where we now sit, than in all the rest of the kingdom." Again, Johnson says: "how different a place London is to different people," each person viewing it through the medium of one particular pursuit: "but the intellectual man is struck with it as comprehending the whole of human life in all its variety, the contemplation of which is inexhaustible." The isolation of London is well conveyed in Horace Walpole's experience, that there is no being alone but in a metropolis; and it is said - the old Dramatist's truism - that "the next-door neighbours don't know each other." The immensity of London has led to its being termed a province covered with houses: or, as Burke phrased it, "an endless addition of littleness to littleness, extending itself over a great tract of land." Johnson's definition is still more to the point: "if you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this city, you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey the innumerable little lanes and courts. It is not in the showy evolutions of buildings, but in the multiplicity of human habitations whi6h are crowded together, that the wonderful immensity of London consists." And many years ago, when Southey began to study the Map of London, he was dismayed at the sight of its prodigious extent. To the man of a reflective turn of mind - to see the stir of the great Babel, And not feel the crowd, is endlessly suggestive. Excerpt from Walks and Talks About Boston Strangers have difficulty in finding their way about Boston on account of the irregularity of its streets. It will help if it is borne in mind that Boston, like New York, was formerly a peninsula and that Washington Street traverses it lengthwise as Broadway does New York. The North Station, which is the terminal for trains from the north and east, is near the northern end, which begins at Haymarket Square. Canal Street, leading out of Haymarket Square, ends at the North Station. Leading at right angles from Washington Street, Summer Street brings one to the South Terminal Station, where trains from the south and west arrive and depart. Winter Street, directly opposite Summer Street, leads to Tremont Street, which runs parallel with Washington Street, and to Boston Common. On the Common, at the head of Winter Street, may be found the Park Street Subway Station, where cars may be taken for any part of the city or suburbs, either directly or by transfer. Leading off Washington Street, at right angles, farther south, is Essex Street, which leads directly to the South Terminal Station. Opposite Essex Street is Boylston Street, which leads by the Common and Public Garden to the Back Bay District. The main line of the Tunnel and Elevated System runs under Washington Street from Forest Hills and Dudley Street to Sullivan Square, Charlestown, transferring at these points to surface cars.
