A lenient judgment is then expected; especially as it was undertaken to while away the dull hours of a monsoon, which in 1866 broke so heavily over the cantonments of Mhow, East Indies, as to cause a cessation of all, but ordinary, military duties, and to render leisure irksome without some appointed task. Wallenstein's Camp is a prelude to Schiller's "Piccolomini" and "Wallenstein's Death" and displays, as T. S. Schiller's intention seems to have been merely to have prepared his reader for the tragedies by a lively picture of laxity of discipline and the mutinous dispositions of Wallenstein's soldiery. La pièce de Kotzebue dura trop longtemps au gré du public; mais le prologue que Schiller avait spécialement composé, et le Camp recueil firent les applaudissements les plus vifs. La représenta tion du jour suivant eut le mème succès, et Schiller écri vait à Iffland que le Wallensteins Layer était décidément un tableau de guerre qui formait un tout, qu'il offrait l'image de l'allemagne au temps de la guerre de trente-ans, qu'il montrait les dispositions des régiments pour et contre le général, qu'il était destiné à dessiner le terrain sur lequel aurait lieu la grande entreprise de Wallens tein Le 19 octobre, Goethe envoyait a l'allgemez'ne Zeitung un article sur les deux représentations du Camp. Ce compte rendu ne fut publié que dans le numéro du '7 novembre. Goethe rendait hommage aux interprètes: quant à la masse des soldats, ajoutait - il, elle n'a pu se produire sur notre théâtre que symboliquement et par un petit nombre de représentants. Mais tout a marché vite et bien i la gaucherie de quelques figurants témoignait seule du peu de temps qu'on avait dû consacrer aux répétitions.
