"Woutertje Pieterse" (or The History of Walter Pieterse) by Multatuli was his second novel and published posthumously in 1890. It is also the most famous work by the author after "Max Havelaar". The history of Wouter Pieterse appeared as fragments in the Ideas , which also forms an organic whole with it. The story is about a dreamy and poetic msterdam boy, Wouter Pieterse, who grows up in a middle-class environment in the French period . The philistinism of his surroundings and curiosity of Wouter often come into conflict, and forms the main theme of the book.Eduard Douwes Dekker (2 March 1820 – 19 February 1887), better known by his pen name Multatuli (from Latin multa tuli, "I have suffered much"), was a Dutch writer famous for his satirical novel, Max Havelaar (1860), which denounced the abuses of colonialism in the Dutch East Indies (today's Indonesia).

Excerpt from Walter Pieterse a Story of Holland In this important position he used his influence to better the condition of the natives; but, to his sor row, he soon found that he did not have the support of his superiors. What he conceived to be right clashed with the line of conduct he was expected to follow. In a rash moment of righteous indig nation he handed in his resignation; and it was accepted. This hasty step put an end to a brilliant political career and entailed upon Dekker years of disappoint ment and hardship. Seeing that he was pursuing the wrong method to help either the javanese, or him self, he immediately tried to get reinstated, but with out success. In 1857 he returned to Holland and applied to the home government, hoping to be vindi cated and restored to his post. Again he was disap pointed. The government offered him another desirable position; but, as it was a matter of principle with Dekker, he declined it. The recent return of 'world literature' to the centre of literary studies has entailed an increased attention to non-European literatures, but in turn has also further marginalized Europe's smaller literatures. Dutch and Flemish Literature as World Literature shows how Dutch-language literature, from its very beginnings in the Middle Ages to the present, has not only always taken its cue from the 'major' literary traditions of Europe and beyond, but has also actively contributed to and influenced these traditions. The contributors to this book focus on key works and authors, providing a concise, yet highly readable, history of Dutch-language literature and demonstrating how this literature is anchored in world literature.

Architecture And Politics In Nigeria written by Nnamdi Elleh and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-08 with Architecture categories.

In 1975, the Nigerian authorities decided to construct a new postcolonial capital called Abuja, and together with several internationally renowned architects these military leaders collaborated to build a city for three million inhabitants. Founded five years after the Civil War with Biafra, which caused around 1.7 million deaths, the city was envisaged as a place where justice would reign and where people from different social, religious, ethnic, and political backgrounds would come together in a peaceful manner and work together to develop their country and its economy. These were all laudable goals, but they ironically mobilized certain forces from around the country in opposition against the Federal Government of Nigeria. The international and modernist style architecture and the fact that the government spent tens of billions of dollars constructing this idealized capital ended up causing more strife and conflict. For groups like Boko Haram, a Nigerian Al-Qaida affiliate organization, and other smaller ethnic groups seeking to have a say in how the country’s oil wealth is spent, Abuja symbolized everything in Nigeria they sought to change. By examining the creation of the modernist national public spaces of Abuja within a broader historical and global context, this book looks at how the successes and the failures of these spaces have affected the citizens of the country and have, in fact, radicalized individuals with these spaces being scene of some of the most important political events and terrorist targets, including bombings and protest rallies. Although focusing on Nigeria’s capital, the study has a wider global implication in that it draws attention to how postcolonial countries that were formed at the turn of the twentieth century are continuously fragmenting and remade by the emergence of new nation states like South Sudan.
