Excerpt from Walton World War History Being Upon the declaration of war in 1917, the New York Division of Archives and History realized that much historical material would be lost unless steps were taken for its preservation. Out of this realization came legislation providing for the preparation of a series of volumes on New Yorks part in the war. With 068, 000 men in military service alone, the task was Herculean. To assist, early in 1920, over a thousand officially appointed local historians were named. Their work was to be completed by October of that year. So slow, however, has been the material for tlie history in coming in that even now there is no telling when the volumes will be ready for the press. A scant handful of the assistants had their local histories filed in Albany by the original date, October, 1920. One of these, a service man himself, wrote for Walton. Avoiding mere wearisome details and. statistics, he has drawn a picture of his community in1917- 18, with the subjective side of service told in vivid language quoted from the men themselves. Though past draft age, Mr. North volunteered in April, 1917, for active infantrjduty. With a like spirit he has now consented to bring out Waltons history in the World War so that his community may have it without the delays frequently unavoidable with state publications. In this most commendable enterprise he has my approval and best wishes. The local war history has its distinctive value. Controversies will arise and tomes will be written concerning the jreat War, and yet with the passing years we, as individuals, will look back to that struggle ever more and more from the personal angle of that community which we then called home. Accordingly, I bespeak this little history not only as an integral portion of the wartime chronicle of New York, but as a volume which each of the authors fellow townsmen should own and cherish as a record of a critical period of his life. Albany, N.Y., July 15, 1922.James Sullivan, State Historian. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In the World War IT is impossible in a small volume to write the history of the World War in even a partially exhaustive manner. Nor is that the Object of the book. Rather than to deal with generalities, its purpose is to describe separate events of which I had intimate knowledge, and individuals with whom I came into close contact and could, therefore, Observe closely; in fact, to furnish a series of snapshots of the great drama. By this means the following pages may possibly pre sent a conception of the war as a whole, which may, nevertheless, differ in many respects from the hitherto recorded, and possibly faulty, history of the war. Every one regards people and events from his own point of View; it is inevitable. In my book, I speak of men with whom I was in Close touch; of others who crossed my path without leaving any personal im pression on me; and finally, of men with whom I was Often in grave dispute. I endeavor to judge of them all in Objective fashion, but I have to describe people and things as I saw them. Wherever the description appears to be at fault, the reason will not be due to a prematurely formed opinion, but rather, probably, to a prevailing lack Of the capacity for judging. Not everything could be revealed. Much was not explained, although it could have been. Too short a period still separates us from those events to justify the lifting of the veil from all that happened. But what remains unspoken can in no way change the whole picture which I describe exactly as imprinted on my mind. Excerpt from History of the World War, Vol. 4 Aside from Petain and Foch, Nivelle was perhaps a logical selection. He had served with distinction under Petain at Verdun. When, as a consequence of his great achievements in defending the Lorraine fortress, Petain was promoted to command a group of armies, Nivelle, as his most conspicuous lieutenant, was named to succeed him in command of the Verdun Army. Under Nivelle's immediate command, although the supreme direction was Petain's, there had been organized that brilliant and amazing counter-offensive of October which had retaken Douaumont and Vaux and swept the Germans out of the. Area of the entrenched camp of Verdun. The last act of Nivelle before he departed to take over the supreme command was to direct the second Verdun counter-offensive, completing the liberation of the town from the Ger man menace which for ten months had threatened it. There was in addition the belief, wholly correct, that the coming of Nivelle to the supreme command would mean aggressive action. Joffre had on the whole advocated limited offensives; Petain was known to be hostile to great ventures which, ' if they failed, meant alike exhaustion of the man-power and the weakening of the morale of the French army; Nivelle was a champion of the attack. And a war-weary Allied world and a France whose hopes for the liberation of her soil had been greatly deferred - longed for decisive action. In this companion volume to his 1995 bibliography of the same title, Daniel Blewett continues his foray into the vast literature of military studies. As did its predecessor, it covers land, air, and naval forces, primarily but not exclusively from a U.S. perspective, with the welcome emergence of small wars from publishing obscurity. In addition to identifying relevant organizations and associations, Blewett has gathered together the very best in chronologies, bibliographies, biographical dictionaries, indexes, journals abstracts, glossaries, and encyclopedias, each accompanied by a brief descriptive annotation. This work remains a pertinent addition to the general reference collections of public and academic libraries as well as special libraries, government documents collections, military and intelligence agency libraries, and historical societies and museums.

Singapore Singapura written by Nicholas Walton and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-01 with History categories.

Modern Singapore is a miracle. Half a century ago it unwillingly became an independent nation, after it was thrown out of the Malay Federation. It was tiny, poor, almost devoid of resources, and in a hostile neighborhood. Now, this unlikely country is at the top of almost every global national index, from high wealth and low crime to superb education and much-envied stability. But have these achievements bred a dangerous sense of complacency among Singapore's people? Nicholas Walton walked across the entire country in one day, to grasp what it was that made Singapore tick, and to understand the challenges that it now faces. Singapore, Singapura teases out the island's story, from mercantilist Raffles and British colonial rule, through the war years, to independence and the building of the current miracle. There are challenges ahead, from public complacency and the constraints of authoritarian democracy to changing geographic realities and the difficulties of balancing migration in such a tiny state. Singapore's second half-century will be just as exacting as the one since independence--as Walton warns, talk of a "Singapore model" for our hyper-globalized world must face these realities.

Excerpt from Young People's History, of the World War The lesson of the World War is a tremendous one. Summed up in a single sentence it is, It must never happen again. The morale of the men in the trenches, on the allied side, at least, was kept up through the weary years of struggle by the persistent propaganda that this was to be the last war, the war to end war. We are playing falsely with the nine million dead, - the flower of the young man hood of a dozen nations if we fail to keep before the minds of their young brothers the glorious story of their sacrifice and the awful needlessness of it all. If war is to be blotted off the face of the earth, each must do his bit. This small contribution is offered to swell the mighty and ever growing vol ume of demands that nations, like individuals, deal with each other openly, honorably, and without greed. When that day shall have come, the navies and armies of the world will have gone the way of the rapier, which every gentleman of the sixteenth century was obliged to carry, or the six - shooter, which took the place of courts and juries in the days of '49. While this volume is written for the understand ing of young people, it is the hope of the author that many older readers may find in his pages some thing to repay their time. Brothers In Arms written by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-05-04 with History categories.

A powerful wartime saga recounting the extraordinary story of the 761st Tank Battalion, the first all-black armored unit to see combat in World War II. “More than a combat story . . . it’s also the story of how black soldiers had to fight (literally and figuratively) for the right to fight the Germans.”—USA Today Kareem Abdul-Jabbar first became immersed in the history of the 761st Battalion through family friend Leonard “Smitty” Smith, a veteran of the unit. Working with acclaimed writer Anthony Walton, Abdul-Jabbar interviewed surviving members of the battalion to weave together a page-turning narrative based on their memories, stories, and historical accounts, from basic training through the horrors of the battlefield to their postwar experiences. Trained essentially as a public relations gesture to maintain the support of the black community for the war, the battalion was never intended to see battle. In fact, General Patton originally opposed their deployment, claiming African Americans couldn’t think quickly enough to operate tanks in combatconditions. But in the summer of 1944, following heavy casualties in the fields of France, the Allies—desperate for trained tank personnel—called the battalion up anyway. While most combat troops fought on the front for a week or two before being rotated back, the men of the 761st served for more than six months, fighting heroically under Patton’s Third Army at the Battle of the Bulge and in the Allies’ final drive across France and Germany. Despite a casualty rate that approached 50 percent and an extreme shortage of personnel and equipment, the 761st would ultimately help liberate some thirty towns and villages, as well as several branch concentration camps. The racism that shadowed them during the war and the prejudice they faced upon their return home are an indelible part of their story. Shining through most of all, however, are the lasting bonds that united them as soldiers and brothers, the bravery they exhibited on the battlefield, and the quiet dignity and patriotism that defined their lives.
