Excerpt from The Poets of the Future: A College Anthology for 1917-1918 Poetry, therefore, has snfiered a relapse during the war. If, however, we realize the aims for which this country has entered the war and for which men like Francis F. Hogan have laid down their lives, then the loss for poetry will have proved an incalculable gain. For poetry is emotion, either remembered or anticipated, just as all literature is an expres sion of the human longing for something greater, something more beautiful than the present. In pro portion as we get nearer to the ideal for which we aim, literature becomes less necessary. I can conceive of a stage of human development where literature would be useless, since the sheer joy of living would be more intense than the mental conception of the greatest artist. The lyric poem which a mother ex periences at the first word that falls from her baby '8 lips i greater than any poem that has ever been com mitted to writing. 80, too, the poem of a human life lived in a community which has attained its aims, is far greater than any written poem. That such a life may be possible for all people, the true poets, the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from War Verse This is by no means the first collection of poems of the great war; and it is certain that it will not be the last. If it has one outstanding characteristic which distinguishes it from other collections, it is that the material for it is not the result of a quest among volumes of verse, and only to a slight degree is it the work of the recognized poets. It owes its origin to the fact that the Editor has been a close reader of the English journals, magazines and reviews since August, 1914, and has been increasingly impressed with the fine quality of the war verse contributed by writers unknown or little known. The spirit rather than the form of this verse carries its appeal to the reader. It is not the work of professional verse writers who have seen in the events of the war stirring and timely literary material; but, to a large extent, it is the spontaneous expression of sincere feeling, - the feeling of the soldier in the trenches, waiting for the order to go "over the top" the next morning, and thinking of home, of England, of Oxford, or of the crocuses of Nottingham, or the feeling of the wounded man in the hospital or of the nurse who cares for him. In not a few instances, the poems, when printed, have borne, under the name of the writer, the inscription "Killed in action," which has given the lines the peculiar poignancy of a message from a man who has fought his last fight, and has done it without fear or faltering. Excerpt from The Muse in Arms: A Collection of War Poems, for the Most Part Written in the Field of Action, by Seamen, Soldiers, and Flying Men Who Are Serving, or Have Served, in the Great War The thundering line of battle stands, And in the air Death moans and sings. They had inherited the blithe, unconquerable courage of the little professional Army which saved the civilised world and England's honour in the still-victorious retreat from Mons to the Marne. For, as the General said, in further explanation of what must seem to the enemy a military miracle, something altogether above and beyond scientific expectation, The Old Army was the nation in miniature. The New Army is the nation itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poems of the Great War The responsibility for the selection of the poems included in this volume rests entirely on my shoulders, though I am pleased to acknowledge the very kind help on this side of the Atlantic of Mr. Edward C. Marsh of the Macmillan Company, Miss Helen Rex Keller, Librarian of the School of Journalism, and Professor A. H. Thorndike of Columbia University; in England of Mr. F. Madan, Bodley's Librarian, Mr. G. W. Wheeler and Mr. J. W. Smallwood of the Radcliffe Camera, Oxford, Sir Walter Raleigh, Lady Scallon, Mr. A. R. Waller, Sir Adolphus Ward, and Sir Herbert Warren. While poetic merit has been, of course, the paramount consideration, I have endeavored to exercise a catholic judgment, and to give fair representation to various schools of thought and expression as well as to the various phases of the War.
