Viele Menschen betrachten gute Gedichte wie "ein gutes Menü." Damit haben sie ganz Recht, denn beides spendet - wenn gut zubereitet - Freude und Wohlbehagen. Aber Gedichte sind manchmal noch mehr, denn sie verfeinern und verschönen gern, was gesagt werden soll. Dabei bieten sie gute Unterhaltung und regen zum Nachsinnen an. Wenn dann noch - gewissermaßen als Würze des "Menüs" - ein realistischer Hintergrund vorhanden ist, wird die genussvolle Zustimmung der Leser sicherlich das Endresultat bilden können. Im Übrigen haben sich fast alle Ereignisse, die in den vorliegenden Gedichten erwähnt werden, jeweils auf ihre Weise zugetragen. Auch gewisse geographische Orte (Sundern im Sauerland, die Ruine Eisenberg im Allgäu, der Falkenstein im Allgäu, der Sachsenring und der Badeteich in Sachsen, usw.) sind mit den Schilderungen identisch. Ergreifen wir also die Gelegenheit, und gönnen wir unserem Herzen und unserem Sinn ein "schmackhaftes Menü" in Form dieser Gedichte.

Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. In Grøn’s reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body, the world, other people, and God. This is the first book in English to survey the Eastern German literary trend of employing humor and satire to come to terms with experiences in the German Democratic Republic and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As sophisticated attempts to make sense of socialism’s failure and a difficult unification process, these contemporary texts help define Germany today from a specific, Eastern German perspective. Grounded in politics and history, ten humorous and satirical novels are analyzed for their literary aesthetics and language, cultural critiques, and socio-political insights. The texts include popular novels such as Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir, Ingo Schulze’s Simple Storys, and Jens Sparschuh’s Der Zimmerspringbrunnen, as well as lesser-known but equally relevant works like Schlehweins Giraffe by Bernd Schirmer and Katerfrühstück by Erich Loest. A broad spectrum of humor and satire theories is applied to probe texts from various angles and suggest multi-layered answers to the question of how these literary modes function in postwall Germany to construct a specifically Eastern German identity. Interviews the author conducted with five of the satirists are appended as primary sources and contribute to the interpretation of the texts.
