Excerpt from The Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington: The Geologic Story of the Spokane Flood A traveler entering the State of Washington from the East crosses a flat-to-rolling countryside of deep, fertile soil commonly sown with wheat. Continuing westward, he abruptly enters a deeply scarred land of bare black rock cut by labyrinthine canyons and channels, plunge pools and rock basins, cascade and cataract ledges, and displaying ragged buttes and cliffs, alcoves, immense gravel bars, and giant ripple marks. The traveler has reached the starkly scenic "Channeled Scablands," and this dramatic change in the landscape may well cause him to wonder "what happened here?" The answer - the greatest flood documented by man. This publication, summarizing the sequence of geologic events that culminated in the so-called "Spokane Flood," was prepared in response to a general interest in geology and a particular interest in the origin of the Scablands often expressed by those crossing the State of Washington. A lush, photographic journey through the origins and cataclysms of one of America’s most enigmatic natural treasures. Carved and scoured by catastrophic floods at the end of the most recent ice age, the Channeled Scablands of eastern Washington State dazzle with their harsh beauty and the diversity of their natural features, including great waterfalls, sprawling canyons, and cinematic palisades. In this pictorial love letter to the region, writer and photographer Timothy Connor expertly combines stunning images, engaging field notes, historical narrative, and a touching personal sojourn. His photography captures the sweeping horizons, braided wetlands, and vibrant wildlife, while his words examine the once-mystifying landmarks of the area through the story of J Harlen Bretz, the geologist who, in the 1920s, first suggested that massive floods formed the Scablands’ epic cataracts and inexplicably deep lakes. Incorporating the poignant story of Connor’s own journey of grief, Beautiful Wounds offers a moving, visual tribute to the enduring power of nature and the healing power of time.

Ice Age Floodscapes Of The Pacific Northwest written by Bruce Norman Bjornstad and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-02 with Science categories.

This heavily illustrated book contains descriptions and geologic interpretations of photographs (mostly aerial) illustrating the power and magnitude of repeated Ice Age flooding in the Pacific Northwest, as recently as 14,000 years ago. The scale of Ice Age floods was so huge that today it is often difficult to see and appreciate the power and magnitude of such megafloods from ground level. However, from the air, landforms created by the floods often come into clear focus. Aerial images, obtained via unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) as well as fixed-wing airplane, add a new perspective on evidence gathered by dozens of scientists since 1923.
