Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 1916, Vol. 6 A study of the results for each soil obtained by the use of the various indicators and by the electrometric method shows that the agreement between the two indicators is very good except in one instance (n o. And that the agreement between the colorimetric and the electro metric methods is good in every case. Such agreements show that the two methods give comparable results and give ground for inferring that such results are approximately correct. It would seem premature at this time to apply the results obtained in this way to the soil as it exists in the field, since carbon dioxide is lost during the drying and the natural soil solution is diluted for the determinations. Nevertheless it may well happen that the errors so introduced (from a field standpoint) are not great enough to obscure the differences observable between different soils. Further work will be required to ascertain whether this is the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Soil Survey of the Hood River-White Salmon River Area, Oregon Washington The Hood River-White Salmon River area covers about 226 square miles, or 144,640 acres, of mountain, valley, and river-bottom land in or adjoining the Hood River and White Salmon River Valleys, in the States of Oregon and Washington. The Hood River Valley is a depression of irregular outline lying in Hood River County in the central part of Oregon. It is just west of the principal axis of the Cascade Range, and is bordered on the east by a low spur of that range. Mount Hood, with an elevation of 11,226 feet above sea level, marks the extreme upper or southern end of the valley, and its permanent mantle of snow and ice contributes not only to the flow in Hood River and its numerous tributaries, but also to that of a number of streams lying west of the Cascades. Excerpt from Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Agriculture Conserving the soil and checking its erosion were of first importance in Washington's mind throughout the years following the Revolution. When looking for at new manager he demanded that the man must be, above all, Midas like, one who can convert everything he touches into manure, as the first transmutation toward gold; in a word, one who can bring wornout and gullied lands into good tilth in the shortest time. He experimented with various fertilizers and used marl and muck from the Potomac River bottom on some of his fields. Mechanical difficulties prevented him from spreading river mud as fertilizer on a large scale. Noah Webster said that at the time of his visit to Mount Vernon the standing toast was Success to the mud! Excerpt from Wayne County Soils T IS A matter of common observation that soils vary tremendously in their productive power, depending upon their physical condition, their chemical composition, and their biological activities. For any com prehensive plan of soil improvement looking toward the permanent mainte nance of our agricultural lands, a definite knowledge of the various existing kinds or types of soil is a first essential. It is the purpose of a soil survey to classify the various kinds of soil of a given area in such a manner as to permit definite characterization for description and for mapping. With the information that such a survey affords, every farmer or landowner of the surveyed area has at hand the basis for a rational system of improve ment of his land. At the same time the Experiment Station is furnished an inventory of the soils of the state, upon which intelligently to base plans for those fundamental investigations so necessary for solving the problems of practical soil improvement.
