Water and Wastewater Management in the Tropics provides the necessary conceptual framework and tools to assess all appropriate aspects of water and sanitation projects in developing countries. Using the lessons learned from courses taught at the Technical University of Denmark, Water and Wastewater Management in the Tropics is the concerted effort of a broad team including "hard core" engineers and practitioners as well as "soft core" environmental and institutional planners and economists, with contributions from renowned researchers as well as seasoned project managers. The first part of the book aims to give a basic understanding of international projects and addresses how to identify, formulate, select, organise, cost, finance, implement and manage water and wastewater management projects in developing countries. Later chapters focus on three different types of water and wastewater management projects in a tropical context: rural water and sanitation; urban water and wastewater management; and, industrial water and wastewater management. Water and Wastewater Management in the Tropics will appeal to graduate environmental engineering students but also to practitioners, economists, sociologists, and institutional planners working with water and sanitation projects in developing countries.

This book provides a systematic exposition of the design features of constructed wetlands, and their management (in terms of siting, physical maintenance, and operation). Only very few books (or chapters) have been published on constructed wetlands in tropical conditions and none are current. The selection of plant species, managing their growth and harvesting cycles, and the impact these have on the attenuation of organic and inorganic pollutants, nutrients, and pathogens would be of interest to students and practitioners of the art working under tropical conditions. The potential of constructed wetlands as a low-cost intervention for developing countries in tropical regions that faced water pollution problems, in particular, deserves to be explored systematically.

Sewage Treatment In Hot Climates written by David Duncan Mara and has been published by Wiley-Interscience this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with Science categories.

In warmer climates, sewage loses its content of dissolved oxygen more rapidly, causing it to become "stale" or "septic", necessitating the use of waste stabilization ponds. Waste stabilization ponds utilize environmentally-aware technology in treating the wastewater of communities in hot climates. This book covers waste stabilization ponds in detail, and examines wastewater management and treatment today.

Excess water in the urban environment results in flooding, which causes structural damage, risks to personal safety and disruption to city life. Water is also a major contributory factor for disease transmission as well as being the medium for transport of many pollutants. These problems are of increasing concern due to climate changes and are parti

The IWA Conference on Environmental Biotechnology: Advancement in Water and Wastewater Application in the Tropics, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 9-10 December 2003, was a peer-reviewed conference. It was specially organized for Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region in collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the International Water Association (IWA), the Malaysia Water Association and the Malaysian Biotechnology Directorate. Papers presented in the conference covered current perspectives on the advancement of water and wastewater applications using environmental biotechnology, as well as methodologies, techniques, modelling, case studies, directions and other specific issues. The emphasis was also on its feasibility in developing countries. The conference also focussed on the biodegradation and bioconversion, health related microorganisms, microbial community structure and analysis, sludge reduction and material recovery, drinking water treatment and safety, nutrient removal and recovery, sensors, modelling and control, molecular techniques, integrated treatment concepts and biological nutrient removal for developing countries, particularly in the tropical region. Excess water in the urban environment results in flooding, which causes structural damage, risks to personal safety and disruption to city life. Water is also a major contributory factor for disease transmission as well as being the medium for transport of many pollutants. These problems are of increasing concern due to climate changes and are particularly apparent in the humid tropics. Integrated Urban Water Management in the Humid Tropics – the output of a project by UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme on the topic – focuses on engineering aspects related to water supply, wastewater and stormwater management in the humid tropics. Flood control is dealt with a specific emphasis on reducing vulnerability to flood disasters in urban areas. The book also addresses environmental health concerns related to the different components of the urban water system and strategies for their control. The volume provides illustrations of different aspects of integrated water management in the urban environment by drawing upon a set of case studies – predominantly from South America. Urban Water Series - UNESCO-IHP, ISSN 1749-0790 Following from the Sixth Phase of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (2002–2007), the Urban Water Series – UNESCO-IHP addresses fundamental issues related to the role of water in cities and the effects of urbanization on the hydrological cycle and water resources. Focusing on the development of integrated approaches to sustainable urban water management, the Series should inform the work of urban water management practitioners, policy-makers and educators throughout the world. Series Editors Cedo Maksimovic, Imperial College, London, United Kingdom J. Alberto Tejada-Guibert, International Hydrological Programme, UNESCO, Paris, France

This book is the result of the international symposium, "Establishment and Evaluation of Advanced Water Treatment Technology Systems Using Functions of Complex Microbial Community", organized in 2000 at the University of Tokyo. The volume presents the most recent progress in application of microbial community analysis, health-related microorganisms management, nutrient removal, waste sludge minimization and materials recovery, and water management in tropical countries. Included in this work are the following major topics in wastewater treatment: application of various innovative techniques of molecular biology such as FISH, DGGE to microbial community analysis of various types of wastewater treatment; microbial aspect of biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus; emission of nitrous oxide during nitrogen transformation; reduction of sludge production in the wastewater treatment process using membrane and material recovery of biopolymer and cell of photosynthetic bacteria. Health-related microbiology in water supply and water management using recent innovative molecular biological tools is presented and health risk management is discussed. The practical application of wastewater treatment in developing countries, especially tropical countries is also reviewed. Researchers in the field of environmental engineering and applied microbiology, and practical engineers who wish to learn the most recent progress in the microbiological aspect of water and wastewater management, will find this book a useful tool.
