Based on new primary and secondary drinking water standards, this detailed manual presents water treatment methods that are considered the "best available technology" by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It examines the design of water supplies for membrane water treatment plants, including reverse osmosis, membrane filtration, and electrodialysis methods, and it explains process design and the water quality problems associated with each process. It also considers significant aspects of membrane process and groundwater and surface water supply development. Information necessary to operate water supplies and evaluate problems in the system are provided, in addition to specific well construction details necessary for the water wells used to supply membrane plants.

Development Of A Decentralized Drinking Water Treatment Plant Based On Membrane Technology For Rural Areas In Vietnam written by Ngoc Dao Trinh and has been published by kassel university press GmbH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-28 with Chlorination categories.

Membrane technology with effective removal of microbial contaminants has been applied widely in drinking water treatment (DWT), but its sustainable and efficient application in rural areas still needs practical research. Backflushing and chemical cleaning are well investigated for membrane-based systems. However, these methods are not always followed properly and in full, especially in cases of applications for remote areas in developing countries. Important key challenges in real world applications are how the system would actually sustain with unskilled personnel, with no electric power for backflushing or with no chemical cleaning on the long run. These challenges were addressed within the framework of this dissertation. A dead-end Ultrafiltration (UF) with flat-sheet membranes was configured to a stationary DWT system working with low pressure and simplest maintenance, in combination with a suitable chlorination solution without energy demand. In the literature review of this dissertation, an overview of many up-to-date membrane based systems in different categories of use is given in detail, covering different aspects of technology, service efficiency and economics. Hydraulic performance of membrane-based systems is normally studied in lab-scale in limited periods from hours to days. Thus, highlight of this research is the investigation of a full-scale demonstration plant based on UF flat-sheet membrane with pore size of 40 nm, conducted in the Hydraulic Workshop at the University of Kassel, operated continuously day and night for long-term tests. The long-term examination focused on many aspects, from hydraulic performance including flux, permeability, transmembrane pressure, efficiency of the simple membrane cleaning methods, to biological quality of treated water and also efficiency of chlorination by using a mechanical chlorine dosing device. During long-term examination, the phenomenon of gas generation from the water in the plant was recognized. The influence of this phenomenon on the permeate flow rate was evaluated and solution for this problem by the gas trapping device was investigated in this research. The experimental results from long-term examination of the Pilot Plant at the University of Kassel served for the materialization of the system into life. Two DWT plants were implemented in a rural village in southern Vietnam. It could be proved that the product of this research is realistically an economic relief of the long lasted insufficient supply to the crucial demand for safe water in the rural communities of developing countries.

Physical Chemical And Biological Treatment Processes For Water And Wastewater written by Tushar Kanti Sen and has been published by Nova Science Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09 with Sewage categories.

Water pollution occurs when toxic pollutants of varying kinds (organic, inorganic, radioactive and so on) are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove such potential pollutants. Today's sources of these potential pollutants, which cause high deterioration of freshwater quality, are city sewage and industrial waste discharge, human agricultural practices, industrial waste disposal practices, mining activities, civil and structural work activities and obviously natural contamination with climate change. When our water is polluted, it is not only devastating to the environment but also to human health. Therefore, development of water and wastewater treatment processes to alleviate water pollution has been a challenging and demanding task for engineers, scientists and researchers. Perhaps this is even more challenging for underdeveloped and developing countries, where water and wastewater treatment facilities, knowledge and infrastructure are limited. Water and wastewater treatment processes are broad and often multidisciplinary in nature, comprising a mixture of research areas including physical, chemical and biological methods to remove or transform various potential pollutants. This is in hopes to achieve acceptable water quality and satisfy governmental and environmental protection agencies' laws and regulations. With these objectives, this book has been written in order to provide various research results and compilation and up-to-date development on the current states of knowledge and techniques in the broad field of water and wastewater treatment processes. Basically, this book will give a comprehensive understanding and advancement and application of various physical, chemical and biological treatment methods in the reduction of potential pollutants (inorganics/organics) from water and wastewater. There are a total 18 book chapters contributed by large number of expert authors around the world, covering the following main research areas: Physical, chemical and biological water treatment processes such as adsorption, biosorption, coagulation/flocculation, electrocoagulation, denitration, membrane filtration/separation, photo-catalytic reduction, advanced oxidation, nutrients removal by struvite crystallisation and nanotechnology; Physical, chemical and biological methods for municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater treatment plants such as primary-secondary sludge treatments, anaerobic digestions, aerobic treatment, activated sludge processes, dewaterability by flocculants, pre-treatments of sludge and rheology of sludge in wastewater treatment; Various operational units/equipment and process control of wastewater treatment plant.

Potable water treatment processes produce safe drinking water and generate a wide variety of waste products known as residuals, including organic and inorganic compounds in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms. In the current regulatory climate, a complete management program for a water treatment facility should include the development of a plan to remove and dispose of these residuals in a manner that meets the crucial goals of cost effectiveness and regulatory compliance. This comprehensive water treatment residuals management plan should involve the: 1) Characterization of the form, quantity, and quality of the residuals; 2) determination of the appropriate regulatory requirements; 3) identification of feasible disposal options; 4) selection of appropriate residuals processing/treatment technologies; and development of a residuals management strategy that meets both the economic and noneconomic goals established for a water treatment facility. This manual provides general information and insight into each of these activities that a potable water treatment facility should perform in developing a residuals management plan.

The continued lack of access to adequate amounts of safe drinking water is one of the primary causes of infant morbidity and mortality worldwide and a serious situation which governments, international agencies and private organizations are striving to alleviate. Barriers to providing safe drinking water for rural areas and small communities that must be overcome include the financing and stability of small systems, their operation, and appropriate, cost-effective technologies to treat and deliver water to consumers. While we know how to technically produce safe drinking water, we are not always able to achieve sustainable safe water supplies for small systems in developed and developing countries. Everyone wants to move rapidly to reach the goal of universal safe drinking water, because safe water is the most fundamental essential element for personal and social health and welfare. Without safe water and a safe environment, sustained personal economic and cultural development is impossible. Often small rural systems are the last in the opportunity line. Safe Drinking Water in Small Systems describes feasible technologies, operating procedures, management, and financing opportunities to alleviate problems faced by small water systems in both developed and developing countries. In addition to widely used traditional technologies this reference presents emerging technologies and non-traditional approaches to water treatment, management, sources of energy, and the delivery of safe water.

Water Treatment Processes: Simple Options bridges the gap in the existing literature by emphasizing low-cost and simple treatment technologies as well as the conventional options. The appropriateness and the economy of the technology must be an integral part of the selection process. This book emphasizes application of the methods and outlines their design criteria in a simplified manner. The authors discuss in detail process modifications and upgrading of conventional treatment facilities. The first two chapters introduce the water quantity and quality requirements and outline both conventional and advanced water treatment processes. The subsequent six chapters extensively discuss the six unit processes in drinking water treatment. Emphasis is given to low-cost methods that can be successfully applied in developing countries.
