For Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), whether he was leading a military campaign or His Majesty's government, his chief aim in life was to serve his country. This idea of service lies at the heart of the foundation of Wellington College and continues to be a guiding light for those who, 200 years after the carnage at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, follow in the footseps of this remarkable man. The Duke brought peace to Europe and was described by Queen Victoria as 'the greatest man this country has ever produced'. His life and achievements towered over the first half of the nineteenth century and he continues to be widely admired. Waterloo to Wellington explores the qualities of character and intellect that made the Duke of Wellington's military campaigns so successful, and which Wellington College in turn aims to foster in its pupils.

The author of Wellington in the Peninsula presents an in-depth study of the British military commander’s early career in Colonial India. Before Arthur Wellesley, the future 1st Duke of Wellington, faced Napoleon's armies, he developed his skills as a military commander in the far reaches of the British Empire. In India, Wellesley led his men to victory against the Tipu Sultan at the Battle of Mallavelly, and suffered injury at the Battle of Seringapatam. He would later put his experience of strategy and tactics to masterly effect against his most formidable opponent in years to come. Historian Jac Weller gives a complete account of Wellington's career in India, the battles and sieges he undertook, the challenges he faced, and the lessons he learned. Weller explores the first major steps in Wellesley's career and demonstrates how these early triumphs set him on the road that would eventually lead to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.

'The author has done a quite outstanding job of editing and footnoting this rare memoir . . . this will be of genuine interest to the Peninsular War historian or enthusiast.' Philip Haythornthwaite John Vandeleur's letters home to his mother are a lively and engaging account of active service during the Napoleonic Wars, recounting everything from day-to-day life on campaign to the experience of pitched battle at Vitoria and Waterloo. As first a light infantryman and then a light cavalryman, Vandeleur was frequently on the outposts of Wellington's forces, in frequent contact with the French and often obliged to live a rough-and-ready lifestyle as a result. The conditions that he endured, and the camaraderie that sustained him, are vividly recounted in this fascinating collection – previously only available in an extremely rare private publication over a century ago. Expertly edited and enhanced with contemporary documents and commentary by Andrew Bamford, this is an outstanding contribution to our understanding of the Peninsular War and Waterloo campaign.

Wellington And Waterloo written by R. E. Foster and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-03 with History categories.

The events which unfolded south of Brussels on 18 June 1815 conferred instant immortality on those who took part in them. For the Duke of Wellington, Waterloo consummated victory in a long battle for what he considered to be his due recognition. Whilst he guarded that reputation jealously, he also jeopardised it by his decision to enter politics in what proved to be an especially partisan age. Even the outpouring of national grief which accompanied his death in 1852 could not totally obscure the ambivalence he had aroused in life. The memory of Waterloo, meanwhile, followed its own trajectory. Travellers initially flocked to the battlefield as if drawn by a magnet. What the triumph meant for Britain, and the wider world, moreover, became a battle in itself, one fought variously in the political, literary and artistic theatres of war. As the nineteenth century advanced, it was only Waterloo's less-exalted participants who, relatively, faded from view – or were ignored. Drawing on many under-utilised sources to illuminate some less familiar themes, this timely study offers fresh perspectives on one of Britain's best-known figures, as well as on the nature of heroism. The reader is also given pause for thought as to appropriate forms of commemoration and how national celebrations are prone to manipulation, for their own purposes, by those in government.
