Waterman is the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku (1890–1968): swimmer, surfer, Olympic gold medalist, Hawaiian icon, waterman. Long before Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz made their splashes in the pool, Kahanamoku emerged from the backwaters of Waikiki to become America’s first superstar Olympic swimmer. The original “human fish” set dozens of world records and topped the world rankings for more than a decade; his rivalry with Johnny Weissmuller transformed competitive swimming from an insignificant sideshow into a headliner event. Kahanamoku used his Olympic renown to introduce the sport of “surf-riding,” an activity unknown beyond the Hawaiian Islands, to the world. Standing proudly on his traditional wooden longboard, he spread surfing from Australia to the Hollywood crowd in California to New Jersey. No American athlete has influenced two sports as profoundly as Kahanamoku did, and yet he remains an enigmatic and underappreciated figure: a dark-skinned Pacific Islander who encountered and overcame racism and ignorance long before the likes of Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Jackie Robinson. Kahanamoku’s connection to his homeland was equally important. He was born when Hawaii was an independent kingdom; he served as the sheriff of Honolulu during Pearl Harbor and World War II and as a globetrotting “Ambassador of Aloha” afterward; he died not long after Hawaii attained statehood. As one sportswriter put it, Duke was “Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey combined down here.” In Waterman, award-winning journalist David Davis examines the remarkable life of Duke Kahanamoku, in and out of the water. The Waterman S Song written by David S. Cecelski and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-01 with Social Science categories.

The first major study of slavery in the maritime South, The Waterman's Song chronicles the world of slave and free black fishermen, pilots, rivermen, sailors, ferrymen, and other laborers who, from the colonial era through Reconstruction, plied the vast inland waters of North Carolina from the Outer Banks to the upper reaches of tidewater rivers. Demonstrating the vitality and significance of this local African American maritime culture, David Cecelski also reveals its connections to the Afro-Caribbean, the relatively egalitarian work culture of seafaring men who visited nearby ports, and the revolutionary political tides that coursed throughout the black Atlantic. Black maritime laborers played an essential role in local abolitionist activity, slave insurrections, and other antislavery activism. They also boatlifted thousands of slaves to freedom during the Civil War. But most important, Cecelski says, they carried an insurgent, democratic vision born in the maritime districts of the slave South into the political maelstrom of the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The most helpful ideas were coming from the strangest places. In 1962, the business historian Alfred Chandler wrote Strategy and Structure, in which he expressed the very powerful notion that structure follows strategy. The conventional wisdom was that Chandler’s dictum had the makings of universal truth. #2 The problem of management effectiveness is that the dearth of practical additions to old ways of thought is painfully apparent. The stream of thought that today’s researchers are tapping is an old one, started in the 1930s by Elton Mayo and Chester Barnard, who challenged ideas put forward by Max Weber, who defined the bureaucratic form of organization. #3 The role of a leader is to harness the social forces in the organization, to shape and guide values. Good managers are value shapers concerned with the informal social properties of organization. #4 The intangibles that top-performing managers describe are much more in line with Weick and March than with Taylor or Chandler. They talk about family feeling, small is beautiful, and simplicity rather than complexity.

Echezonachukwu Nduka's sophomore poetry collection, Waterman, situates itself in enchanting musicality while exploring themes on innocence, memory, religion, music, and the complex corridors of political history. In Waterman, the metaphysical is interspersed with the quotidian, the philosophical, leaving us with timeless writing that takes readers on a journey of imagination and the rediscovery of humanity in all its glories and shortcomings.A concert pianist of Nigerian origin, Nduka's Waterman is symphonic, reflective, evocative, yet damning. This book is, in many ways, a testament to how the author views the world through the lens of music.

An acacia tree lost in the wasteland. Two men are sitting in its shadow. One of them, an old Bedouin, is telling his European visitor the most extraordinary story ever to happen in the desert. This is a story about friendship and hate, hope and despair, love and death; a tale about the grandiose dream of a man who decided that nothing is impossible. In the middle of nowhere, deep within the moaning wind and void of the desert, the tales of the old Bedouin Meddur will revive the quest of Waterman. This most desperate man on earth carries within himself a foolish hope to impose his will upon the stormy winds of the Tenere, the hottest place on earth. Waterman's journey is an odyssey beyond the limits of life and civilization, and it is the search of every human soul longing for eternity. Waterman's quest for an impossible oasis will draw the reader toward finding a way to their own soul.
