Wavelets have emerged as an important tool in analyzing functions containing discontinuities and sharp spikes. They were developed independently in the fields of mathematics, quantum physics, electrical engineering, and seismic geology. Interchanges between these fields during the last ten years have led to many new wavelet applications such as image compression, turbulence, human vision, radar, earthquake prediction, and pure mathematics applications such as solving partial differential equations. This book develops a theory of wavelet bases and wavelet frames for function spaces on various types of domains. Starting with the usual spaces on Euclidean spaces and their periodic counterparts, the exposition moves on to so-called thick domains (including Lipschitz domains and snowflake domains). Specifically, wavelet expansions and extensions to corresponding spaces on Euclidean $n$-spaces are developed. Finally, spaces on smooth and cellular domains and related manifolds are treated. Although the presentation relies on the recent theory of function spaces, basic notation and classical results are repeated in order to make the text self-contained. This book is addressed to two types of readers: researchers in the theory of function spaces who are interested in wavelets as new effective building blocks for functions and scientists who wish to use wavelet bases in classical function spaces for various applications. Adapted to the second type of reader, the preface contains a guide on where to find basic definitions and key assertions.

This book is about the theory of so-called Schwarz methods for solving variational problems in a Hilbert space V arising from linear equations and their associated quadratic minimization problems. Schwarz methods are based on the construction of a sequence of approximate solutions by solving auxiliary variational problems on a set of (smaller, finite-dimensional) Hilbert spaces $V_i$ in a certain order, combining them, and using the combined approximations in an iterative procedure. The spaces $V_i$ form a so-called space splitting for V, they need not necessarily be subspaces of V, and their number can be finite or infinite. The convergence behavior of Schwarz methods is influenced by certain properties of the space splittings they are based on. These properties are identified, and a detailed treatment of traditional deterministic and more recent greedy and stochastic orderings in the subproblem solution process is given, together with an investigation of accelerated methods. To illustrate the abstract theory, the numerical linear algebra analogs of the iterative methods covered in the book are discussed. Its standard application to the convergence theory of multilevel and domain decomposition methods for solving PDE problems is explained, and links to optimization theory and online learning algorithms are given. Providing an introduction and overview of iterative methods which are based on problem decompositions and suitable for parallel and distributed computing, the book could serve as the basis for a one- or two-semester course for M.S. and Ph.D. students specializing in numerical analysis and scientific computing. It will also appeal to a wide range of researchers interested in scientific computing in the broadest sense.

The continuous wavelet transform has deep mathematical roots in the work of Alberto P. Calderon. His seminal paper on complex method of interpolation and intermediate spaces provided the main tool for describing function spaces and their approximation properties. The Calderon identities allow one to give integral representations of many natural operators by using simple pieces of such operators, which are more suited for analysis. These pieces, which are essentially spectral projections, can be chosen in clever ways and have proved to be of tremendous utility in various problems of numerical analysis, multidimensional signal processing, video data compression, and reconstruction of high resolution images and high quality speech. A proliferation of research papers and a couple of books, written in English (there is an earlier book written in French), have emerged on the subject. These books, so far, are written by specialists for specialists, with a heavy mathematical flavor, which is characteristic of the Calderon-Zygmund theory and related research of Duffin-Schaeffer, Daubechies, Grossman, Meyer, Morlet, Chui, and others. Randy Young's monograph is geared more towards practitioners and even non-specialists, who want and, probably, should be cognizant of the exciting proven as well as potential benefits which have either already emerged or are likely to emerge from wavelet theory.

This book presents a method that allows the use of multiresolution principles in a time domain electromagnetic modeling technique that is applicable to general structures. The multiresolution time-domain (MRTD) technique, as it is often called, is presented for general basis functions. Additional techniques that are presented here allow the modeling of complex structures using a subcell representation that permits the modeling discrete electromagnetic effects at individual equivalent grid points. This is accomplished by transforming the application of the effects at individual points in the grid into the wavelet domain. In this work, the MRTD technique is derived for a general wavelet basis using a relatively compact vector notation that both makes the technique easier to understand and illustrates the differences between MRTD basis functions. In addition, techniques such as the uniaxial perfectly matched layer (UPML) for arbitrary wavelet resolution and non-uniform gridding are presented. Using these techniques, any structure that can be simulated in Yee-FDTD can be modeled with in MRTD.

Wavelet and subband transforms have been of great interest in the fields of - gineering and applied mathematics. The theories of these powerful signal p- cessing tools have matured and many applications utilizing them are emerging in different disciplines. This book, comprised of eleven chapter contributions from prominent researchers in the field, focuses on communications and mul- media applications of wavelet and subband transforms. The first six chapters of this book deal with a variety of communications applications that significantly benefit from wavelet and subband theories. S- ilarly, the remaining five chapters present recent advances in multimedia - plications of wavelet and subband transforms. These chapters interconnect the requirements of applications with the underlying theory and their engineering solutions. Hence, the reader can easily trace the entire path from fundamentals to the purpose and merit of application in hand. A combined list of references for the entire volume is given at the end of the text that should be helpful to the interested reader for a further study. This book is anticipated to be of particular interest to engineers and sci- tists who want to learn about state-of-the-art subband and wavelet transform applications as well as their theoretical underpinnings. It can also serve as a supplementary book for graduate level engineering and applied mathematics courses on wavelet and subband transforms.

This monograph is a comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art methodologies that can dramatically enhance the efficiency of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, the most popular electromagnetic field solver of the time-domain form of Maxwell's equations. These methodologies are aimed at optimally tailoring the computational resources needed for the wideband simulation of microwave and optical structures to their geometry, as well as the nature of the field solutions they support. That is achieved by the development of robust “adaptive meshing” approaches, which amount to varying the total number of unknown field quantities in the course of the simulation to adapt to temporally or spatially localized field features. While mesh adaptation is an extremely desirable FDTD feature, known to reduce simulation times by orders of magnitude, it is not always robust. The specific techniques presented in this book are characterized by stability and robustness. Therefore, they are excellent computer analysis and design (CAD) tools. The book starts by introducing the FDTD technique, along with challenges related to its application to the analysis of real-life microwave and optical structures. It then proceeds to developing an adaptive mesh refinement method based on the use of multiresolution analysis and, more specifically, the Haar wavelet basis. Furthermore, a new method to embed a moving adaptive mesh in FDTD, the dynamically adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) FDTD technique, is introduced and explained in detail. To highlight the properties of the theoretical tools developed in the text, a number of applications are presented, including: Microwave integrated circuits (microstrip filters, couplers, spiral inductors, cavities). Optical power splitters, Y-junctions, and couplers Optical ring resonators Nonlinear optical waveguides. Building on first principles of time-domain electromagnetic simulations, this book presents advanced concepts and cutting-edge modeling techniques in an intuitive way for programmers, engineers, and graduate students. It is designed to provide a solid reference for highly efficient time-domain solvers, employed in a wide range of exciting applications in microwave/millimeter-wave and optical engineering.
